After Gen Aziz and Gen Kayani (Ex 10 Corps commander) it was Gen Ali Kuli Khan Khattak, who was tipped to become the Pakistan Army Chief who says that ‘Kargil was a bigger disaster than East Pakistan’! Read on......

ISLAMABAD: The Kargil incursion was a far bigger tragedy for Pakistan than the civil war which led to the creation of Bangladesh and damaged the country's Kashmir cause, a former general who quit army after being superseded by President Pervez Musharraf as chief of army has said.

Retired Gen Ali Kuli Khan Khattak, who quit the army after the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appointed Musharraf as Army Chief in 1998 superseding him, said Kargil was flawed in terms of its conception, tactical planning and execution.

"It was an unprofessional decision by someone, who has served in the Pakistan Army for 40 years. As the architect of Kargil, he must answer critical questions for sacrificing so many soldiers. I am sure Kargil would continue to haunt him for the rest of his life," he said reacting to claims by Musharraf that Kargil was a successful operation.

He also challeged Musharraf's assertion that Kargil had revived the Kashmir issue. "I would say Kargil has damaged the Kashmir cause. It was a disaster bigger than the East Pakistan tragedy," he said, referring to the 1971 civil war which led to the creation of Bangladesh.

"At that time, Pakistan at least had some friends but on Kargil we were friendless. There was no way we could defend this tactless move," he said in an interview to 'The News' newspaper.

Describing Musharraf as "Mr General U-turn," Khattak said his seven-year rule has been "characterized by U-turns on policy matters. This president cannot hold on to anything. He is impulsive. He took decisions on Kargil, Waziristan, Balochistan and a host of other issues and then backtracked on most of them."

He also accused Musharraf of mishandling the situation in Waziristan and Balochistan and "ordering the bombing and killing of our own people."

So three senior professional Pakistani generals have corroborated the fact that Kargil was a disaster both militarily as well as politically. But some of our Pakistani friends still insist that Pakistan won the war! They probably know more than what their own generals know! :cheesy:

kargil was a big disaster for them no doubt but it was no where near as big as East Pakistan disaster

Seven years after the Kargil conflict, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has for the first time admitted in the Hindi version of his book, In the Line of Fire, that 357 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the war and 665 wounded. He claims that 157 soldiers were killed during the conflict and 200 after the ceasefire was announced.
  (He said 260 now )

Musharraf, who was chief of the Pakistan Army during Kargil, called for an urgent review of the Kargil chapter in Agnipath, the Hindi version of his book, to insert the figures, which are missing in the English edition.

"Yudh viram se pehle hamare 157 sainik shaheed huey aur 250 ghayal huey. Sena ki wapasi ke dauran hamare 200 sainik shaheed huey aur 415 ghayal huey, (Before the ceasefire, 157 of our soliders became martyrs and 250 were wounded. While the Army was on its way back, 200 soldiers became martyrs and 415 were wounded)," writes Musharraf in Agnipath.

The figures, however, stand completely at odds with the Indian estimate of 1,100-plus killed on the Pakistani side. These were based on reports after counting of graves on the Pakistan side. Then Army chief V P Malik notes in his book on Kargil that 270 Pakistan soldiers were buried in India.

But top officials here agree that it is huge step in Musharraf's mind to admit he lost 357 soldiers when one takes into account that 522 Indian personnel were killed in the war. Indian military agencies have a list of 45 Pakistan officers who were killed in Kargil.

That's why some wise guy said this about Pakistan.
This country will drift from crisis to calamity, from calamity to catastrophe, and from catastrophe to disaster.
