BANGKOK: Police from Bangkok Crime Suppression Division (CSD) have arrested a key suspect wanted by Interpol and Pakistani authorities for Baldia factory incident, which caused more than 250 deaths and scores of injuries four years ago.

The Thai police traced him living in a five-star hotel in Bankok’s up-market area and arrested him.

About 40 commandos raided the Royal Garden Home Hotel in Soi Nana yesterday evening and arrested Abdul Rehman alias Bhola, 46, who was staying alone in the room, a police official told media.

"Thai Interpol tracked this suspect following an arrest warrant sought by the Pakistani authorities," Thailand´s Interpol chief, Major General Apichart Suriboonya told AFP.

"He will be repatriated as soon as Pakistan is ready," he added.



Last month, the anti-terrorism court (ATC) had severely reprimanded the concerned authorities for failing to arrest suspended chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Karachi Tanzeemi Committe, Hammad Siddiqui, and sector in-charge Baldia Town Abdul Rehman Bhola, the two main suspects of the case.

Pakistan police later found the suspect travelled to Thailand two weeks ago so they coordinated with Interpol and Thai police to track him down.

His wife told media that she last contacted Rehman couple of days ago but his mobile is off since yesterday. “Hospital management informed me about the raid and that Rehman has been arrested,” she added.

In September 2012, over 250 factory workers perished in the chemical factory fire. The incident was brushed off as having occurred owing to a short circuit but was later declared a case of arson; the factory was set ablaze owing to non-payment of protection money.

A joint investigation team probing the matter put the blame on some MQM members and activists including Siddiqui and Rehman. The party has repeatedly denied the allegations.

The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) team brought Abdul Rahman alias Bhola to Jinnah International Airport in Karachi from Bangkok, sources said on Tuesday. Rahman is one of the main accused in Baldia factory inferno case which claimed more than 250 lives.

According to sources, the FIA will start initial investigation and then hand him to authorities.

A two-member FIA went to Thailand on Sunday to get custody of Abdul Rahman. After reaching Thailand the team requested access to Bhola, who was under treatment at a hospital of Bangkok prison for having kidney problems.

The FIA had constituted a two-member team comprising Deputy Director Badar Baloch and Inspector Rehmatullah Domki for Bhola’s extradition to Pakistan, sources had informed. The team arrived in Thailand along with documents and legal records pertaining to the Baldia factory tragedy, for taking custody of Rahman alias Bhola.

Earlier in his initial statement to the Interpol in Bangkok, Bhola had maintained himself as a ‘political worker affiliated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement,’ sources within the Federal Investigation Agency had told private publication house.

He was rounded up from Bangkok by the Interpol on December 03, upon the request of Pakistani authorities.

On November 28 during hearing of the Baldia factory fire case, an anti-terrorism court had grilled authorities for not being able to arrest Hammad Siddiqui and Rahman alias Bhola.

The court had ordered the interior ministry to arrest fugitives with the help of Interpol. Subsequent investigations led to revelations that the factory was deliberately set ablaze over non-payment of extortion money.

Abdul Rahman alias Bhola arrested in Bangkok by Interpol was an illegal immigrant, it was learnt. Abdul Rahman travelled to Bangkok from Malaysia aided by human smugglers.

Forty-seven-year old Abdur Rahman made his first passport in 2009 on which he traveled to Dubai. Immediately after the Baldia Factory fire incident Rahman got a residence visa for Dubai. In June 2014, a new passport was issued from Dubai. This passport is valid till January 2019.

Paksarzameen Party (PSP) and MQM-Pakistan (MQM-P) in separate statements had refuted allegations that Rahman was once associated with their parties.

MQM-P leader Rauf Siddiqui speaking to journalists in Karachi said that he could neither accept nor deny that Rahman was associated to MQM.

Whereas, PSP Chief Mustafa Kamal said that Rahman was not a member of his party. “He was arrested from outside Pakistan and he was never a part of PSP,” he said.
