For the first time, police have officially identified the Gulshan attack mastermind as Bangladesh-origin Canadian citizen Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, and said he used to visit the Kallyanpur militants in their hideout.

Tamim held meetings with the Kallyanpur militants to inspire them and provide financial support for their terrorist activities, according to the statement of a case which was filed yesterday by Mirpur Model police station Inspector (operation) Shajalal Alam in connection with Tuesday’s police raid.

Nine militants were killed when police carried out the drive in Dhaka’s Kallyanpur early Tuesday.

The case statement also read that the sole surviving suspect, Rakibul Hasan alias Rigan, has told interrogators that they received funding, arms and explosives from Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh.

The case further named other suspects who allegedly acted as trainers and leaders for the militants; they are: Iqbal, Ripon, Khalid, Mamun, Manik, Jonayed Khan, Badal and Azadul alias Kabiraz.

Police’s counter-terrorism chief Monirul Islam said although they have already got names of several suspected masterminds behind the recent militant activities, those might just be aliases. Efforts are on to find out the true identities of these people and trace them, he said.

Sources close to the ongoing investigation told the Dhaka Tribune that Gulshan attack mastermind Tamim has been working as a link between foreign and domestic militant groups. Since leaving Canada in 2013, he has been hiding in Bangladesh, the sources added.

Monirul Islam described Tamim as the leader of a new faction of JMB. The police believe that he is still in Bangladesh and efforts are on to detain him, he added.

According to investigators, JMB now has two factions: one led by JMB’s jailed spiritual leader Mawlana Saidur Rahman, while Tamim took over the other faction after coming back to Bangladesh.

If I'm not wrong, this Tamim Chowdhury was declared as the chief of IS' Bangladesh franchisee (Soldiers of the Khilafah in Bengal) last month. So are they suggesting that this new faction of JMB has evolved into the local franchisee of IS?

Also, how could the other faction be led by Saidur Rahman who's in jail? They must have a new leader...

I'm guessing this new leader would be Salauddin aka Salehin... He was the commander of JMB's Sylhet-Mymensingh operation area and was snatched from a prison van after being sentenced to death in 2014... In a recent statement by JMB in a pro-Al Qaeda platform Dawahilallah, he was mentioned as their new chief and also denied their involvement in the Gulshan attack...

These people are not JMB. This is a complete different group.

They are IS. Part of these terrorists went to Turkey including cutie Nibras to Join IS but they came back. Most probably IS asked them to do so as part their new strategy of disseminating the fight. This makes them foooking ISIS.

We have seen IS flags in their shelters. But Government is too adamant to call them IS that they have invented faction in JMB.

Well, they are likely to have evolved into new groups with direct links to foreign groups, internal conflicts may be?

But the roots seem to be JMB...

JMB was bunch of half literate goons from villages. I dont think this group has anything to do with JMB

Point! However, the Dabiq issue mentioned about the JMB members joining their operations in Bangladesh. Also, those who claim to be affiliated with Al Qaeda may have direct roots in JMB. That's well according to Al Qaeda's organizational strategies, they usually affiliate with those who have a prior experience...

Okay, as per the official reports, we are now dealing with three major groups,

1. Led by Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury - perhaps the local franchisee of IS
2. Led by Major Zia (sacked) - Ansarullah Bangla Team/Asar-al-Islam (claims to be affiliated with AQIS)
3. Led by Saidur Rahman/Salauddin - the remnants of JMB
