Key Points
- USS Coronado left San Diego on 22 June to participate in RIMPAC 2016
- A Harpoon firing will be conducted during July 2016 as part of the RIMPAC live fire phase
Coronado departed its home port of San Diego, California, on 22 June. The ship will initially participate in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2016 exercise before beginning its deployment proper to the western Pacific. A Harpoon firing will be conducted during July as part of the RIMPAC live fire phase.
The Harpoon installation on board Coronado , implemented on an accelerated timeframe in order to be ready for RIMPAC 2016, is a standalone embodiment independent of the ship's combat system. The US Naval Air Systems Command awarded Boeing a sole-source USD334,000 contract in April this year for the integration of the Advanced Harpoon Weapon Control System (AHWCS) ontoCoronado in San Diego; AHWCS is the shipboard mission planning and weapon control terminal associated with Harpoon.
In addition, two Harpoon launcher structures have been mounted athwartships in a position ahead of Coronado 's bridge. No missile canisters had been installed at the time of Coronado 's departure from San Diego.
Following the RIMPAC participation, Coronado will in August sail for a planned 16-month deployment. Based at Changi naval base in Singapore, the ship will operate with the US 7th Fleet.
