Republicans 'asked Iran to delay prisoner swap' until after US election - France 24

Members of the US Republican Party asked officials in Tehran to delay a January prisoner swap until after the 2016 presidential election, an Iranian admiral told FRANCE 24 on Thursday.


In his first interview with French media, Admiral Ali Shamkhani, who is secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, told FRANCE 24 that US Republicans – wary of allowing President Barack Obama to win a public relations victory ahead of the US presidential election in November – asked for the swap to be put on hold.

“We were carrying out negotiations with the Obama administration, when representatives of the Republican Party got in touch with us,” Shamkhani said. “As a favour, they asked us to do what we could to hinder the talks and to push them back until after the next US presidential elections – in other words, after President Obama's departure.”

“I felt that this rivalry at the heart of American power was inappropriate,” Shamkhani added.

“It seems that the Republicans relegated humanity to second place after political expediency, which I found very surprising. But we succeeded, and the prisoners were released during Obama’s mandate.”

By the way this is not the first time republicans have done such things. Republicans had also asked Iran not to release the diplomats until the election which saw Carter lose and Nixon also had asked Vietnamese to stall the negotiations for peace until he won the election.

It is their old habit, to win votes with the help of outside forces.

That is a philosophical fact. But both public should remain clear-eyed and not get fooled. A honorable and respectful solution which brings benefits to both public must negotiated. This is the only solution here: a rapprochement with Iran as Nixon did with China. Unfortunately Obama did not have the courage and spine for it. I hope the next US president does not disappoint since Iran is ready for an honorable and respectful rapprochement taking into account benefit of both nations.

Surely the good admiral would have the names of these 'Republican Party' members, no ?

I think sometimes American deserved Bush family , at least he dragged you in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and you like it.
Moreover that's our money , we do whatever we want to do ..

Looks like these 'Republican Party' officials are as real as the Iranian 'stealth' fighter.
