Great news for the region

Great news for the region in general. Being a developed nation, Japan has a greater potential to offer development assistant in underdeveloped areas. The regional discourse should definitely reverse back to development and economic cooperation. I guess the AIIB has kick-started many parallel initiatives.

There's no free lunch, only national interest (in this case, which is Japan).
Rich countries always invest direct and indirectly in poorer countries. Long term goal is strengthen their soft power.
