2017 Census: Population by city Karachi 14.9m, Lahore 11.12m, Faisalabad 3.2m

Guys assuming population density between Karachi and Lahore is same [this is something you guys living there in the cities can comment on] then the figures given. By using scale comparison Karachi - 14.9 and Lahore -11.1 are about correct. Physical urban agglomeration is used by using satellite imagery. This below is true scale comparison of the physical built environment. Hope this helps.

Frankly Lahore's population doesn't make sense either. When I was in school some 16 years back, it was discussed that its population is around 6M. Lahore is so crowded now that there's no way its population is less than 17-18M.

Islamabad is also no less than 1.5-2.0M.

These are initial results and more verification will happen before next year. But for now Karachi myth of 30m population has been put to rest. I always had doubts about Karachi population claims as it was clearly agenda driven. There is no way Karachi could afford 300% growth in just 19 years. KP/FATA census proves not many people moved to Karachi as its claimed. Lahore surroundings district are very populated and people there are more well off compared to in districts which surround Karachi. Same is the case with Islamabad.

For Karachi to experience such growth millions upon millions of KP and Punjab have to move there which doesn't sound logical.

Urdu speakers/muhajirs will continue to be biggest ethnicity but bit less then in 1998.

Islamabad city population is 1m now and overall 2m including rural areas. In terms of growth ISB, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta have seen highest growth. After them rest of cities like Karachi, Pindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Hydrabad, Gujranwala.

I think Karachites have certain insecurities, it would probably better to give Karachi a provincial status to end this debate of its population for once and all. Though Sindhis are gonna make hue and cry.

Sir, I'm not referring to the total population figure, which I don't take issue with.

I'm talking about the population figure for Karachi. Lahore more than doubled in size, but Karachi only grew by 60%? And Hyderabad grew by only 49%? This is an absolute joke.

1) Over the last 20 years, Lahore has been in the midst of a sustained economic boom. Karachi has spent most of that time in some emergency or another. Are you surprised that has affected growth?

2) Karachi numbers do not include the Karachi metropolitan area (this is distinct from KMC) which includes many suburbs and "rural areas". Lahore's population includes in metropolitan area. The reason is that Karachi is divided by the Sindh Government into 6 districts. Lahore is just one large city district.

This is great tool. One can compare different Pakistani cities actual size. Now I'm sure final results after more verification will not be far off from initial.

Lahore is actually even bigger than what you have highlighted on the map. DHA (defence housing authority) for example extends up to BRB canal now (yes the infamous 65 brb canal) next to Karbath, and has practically grown into Barki by now over the canal, which is at most 6-10km from the border! At this rate some of us will in the near future have a view of Amritsar from our balconies.

14 million for Karachi?

According to Wiki, yes yes I know it's not a very valid source, but if you've got another one, post it here, Karachi covers an area of 3,781 km2 compared to Lahore's 550 km2. Yet if we are to accept this report, Karachi's density is no where near as high compared to Lahore. Which is BS, anyone who's been to both cities knows that at the very minimum, the density is at similar levels.

This makes absolutely no sense.

Though the total quoted 207 million is correct...the population of Islamabad at 1 million and Karachi at 14.9 million is absolute rubbish. Islamabad has now about 2.00 million population in other reports and the Karachi population reported in the new census was around 17.65 million.

I mean to say that this report is incorrect or data mixed together.

Check this report...

check out kaptaan map, its not about area but how much is build as part of city. I did same with Islamabad, Pindi, Peshawar, Quetta etc and size of cities build and their population make sense when compared with Lahore or Karachi. And just in case Lahore area on wiki come as 1772km which is pretty much all build as city. While Karachi have lots of space left because it include other areas outside main city where nothing is build yet. Same is case with Islamabad where populated urban sectors occupy less then half of total ICT area.

City population isn't posted on PBS website so I will not take these numbers as official yet. But Islamabad 2m include 1m rural population. Karachi when taken as whole and not just main city likely have population of 17 or even 18m. But I doubt its much more as total urban population of sindh is 25m and rural 23m.

That Karachi map is wrong mate, I live in Kemari, are you saying I don't live in Karachi? There is no Karachi without Kemari as it is one of the oldest parts of the city! Karachi covers a much larger distance then what this map shows, even Bin Qasim comes under Malir, which again IS Karachi.

Karachi is made of nearly two dozen "Towns", unless this new census is not counting them in Karachi, which is stupid to say the least, the numbers are grossly under represented.

Yay kiya mazakh hai bhai? @LA se Karachi @Musafir117

In any case, my issue is not with the share of each provinces' population, but the apparent massive under-counting of Karachi and Hyderabad.

Are you saying that the total population should be even higher (i.e more than 207 million) because cities are undercounted w.r.t their actual population (i.e actual hidden sample units from grand total)....or such people have been alloted to rural instead of urban (i.e effectively grand total is ok but urban and rural % are wrong i.e biased to too high in rural)?

Is the result out for ethnicities? Pashtun, Punjabis, Sindhis etc.

He meant more rural population have migrated to urban Karachi then census shows. Anyway PBS still have many months left to verify final data, census in Pakistan isn't always straight forward. Army was with teachers who counted and both had to fill farms separately along asking for CNIC as well.

Where people feel something is wrong, they will likely redo census in that place with help of Nadra.
