India is about to spend a ridiculous $500 million on a statue in the middle of the Arabian sea

@jbgt90 any way to contact you off the forum man? My next ban might be for a few years :)

Actually it is a smart investment. Statue of Liberty generates a lot of money for New York.

"Liberty Island, which averages more than 10,000 visitors a day, had been closed for eight months following Hurricane Sandy last October.

The National Park Service reported that 3.7 million people visited the site in 2011, generating $174 million in economic activity

yeah and it's an investment only when done on a grand scale- big island, big statue etc. But I'm actually more interested in the mindset. When you create landmarks you create the idea of the 'great city'. Then people slowly start thinking of it as a city that needs to 'live up' to some standards rather than just a hodge podge of people living together in squalor. There is a change in mindset.

I think that money will be better spent providing uninterrupted drinking water and sewage to Mumbai city.

Those are FAR MORE URGENT than any statue.

Mumbai is dying and these fools are building statues.

Its nothing compared to amount of money we have to spend in order to keep check on rats crossing borders.
Can you please control the rats so that we can feed the hungry mouths. Your support in the noble cause is seeked.

As expect low life Scum bags like you tends to jump from one topic to another .. you are pathetic

Sorry pal i have no idea that Maharastra is another country .

No dude, Maharashtra is one of the states of the Union of Indian, has a much bigger GDP than that of Pakistan, whose capital is Mumbai, where the statue is be built. Mumbai, Maharashtra's capital produces more tax revenue, than that of entire Pakistan. I just mentioned Maharashtra, because u mentioned Chabahar port. Chabahar port is funded by the Central Govt, while the statue is funded by the state Govt. Hope this clears your doubt.

dear indian brothers. your current government most votes are due to religious ambition and some extra or over patriotism and your government will exploit your majority weakness in fullest form to win next elections. This statue can become a slogan and election rally speech part. Feeding the poor won't do the job for them.

Modi sarkar is doing extra ordinary unnecessary things just for political reasons instead of doing something for the country. Demonitization is also a part of these steps as well as this statue. I am afraid the same political reasons will lead the region into Armageddon.

BJP under Sir vajpayee was an excellent party but it is now completely ruined. Now anyone who question government including congress is a traitor or Pakistani.

Using extremism and patriotism card for political reason will without any doubt destabilize india. It will make people more sensitive on many issues and will cause rift between the secular progressive powers and the other group. With time the rift will converts into full extremist behaviour. for example if today someone is called pakistan or anti india power will be attacked or assaulted tomorrow.

Note: it is my honest opinion about the impact of such desicions and many statement in indian politics on the future of india. There is no intention of trolling or hurting someones sentiments.

Dear Pakistanis,

Rubbish write up. These statues will innovation, impress, motivate local population and stand tall for nation's proud history. Are you saying by spending 3500 cr of welfare will save all the problems you mentioned? Who don't have hunger issue from US UK to Russia China all have poverty. And don't worry our growth is massive and this money is peanut. This is just one state in India who wants to build it for their identity. It's more than politics. We have lots of projects like these coming up in entire nation. As we are developing faster than before our economy is well worth taking a huge steps.

Did you know in the last few weeks our people deposited over 10 trillion rupees and only 3-4 trillion worth of 2000 rupees notes released. That's our power parity.

Of course this will become hallmark of new India and prosperity image.

This is Maharashtra. For us Shivaji Maharaj is God. Its because of him we are still proud Hindus. Its our money no one can question us. period.

I am a big fan of Shivaji too........ but I am a bigger fan of Continuous water from taps and modern sewage tunnels and treatment plants along with Storm drains.

Which do you think Mumbai needs urgently ? a statue or continuous water supply ?

IF they really wanted to know public sentiment then they should have asked people to contribute for the statue rather than take it from the treasury which can be used for more important things.

That would have been ethical, moral and even praise worthy.

Diverting this money from tax payers is not praise worthy by any measure of imagination.

Government of Maharashtra is paying for it. and dont worry you will not find single person from Maharashtra who will oppose it.

I do.

GoM has no business diverting tax money for statues. Especially when Mumbai has gone to the dogs. I have a 3 BHK in Hiranandani Powai and I have to import water using Tankers. The irony is that my house overlooks the Powai lake.

If you are from Mumbai, I don't even have to tell you how the rest of Mumbai lives.

I expect Mayawati to use taxes to build statues, not Devendra Phadnavis.
