What's new

Pakistan Army received it's first Agusta Westland 139 Helicopter.

Nice to see you in Troll mode :enjoy:
The mood of discussion going on here gets on to me! :P
That range of 50 to 250 was absurd.

Big is always expensive. Mi-17 is medium lift and these are heavy life, they cant be compared.
Value for money is to be analyzed here and every system will have a different value for different military doctrine. Also our geography and logistics need to be looked at. All said, i agree that if we can get a squadron or so of heavy lift choppers that would be GREAT keeping the medium lift role with Mi17

i disagree, because Pakistan should not need heavy lift birds, because in my point instead of having 3 or 4 heavy lift choppers, its better to have a squadron of medium lift choppers, because of their low cost of maintenance, and maneuverability during conflict time.

secondly these heavy birds are to easy to target, because of their maneuverability .
and for lifting one APC or 155MM gun, i never agree that for that purpose we need to have a heavy lift choppers.

The AW139M is classified as a mid-size helicopter, and can be used for the following missions: Firefighting, Medical, Military, and Police. It can transport up to 15 passengers, just about the same as competitors of a similar size. The AW139M can fly as far as 573 nautical miles on a tank of fuel, a range that's 148 mi farther than other similarly sized rotorcraft. Its maximum altitude ceiling Hovering Over Ground Environment (HOGE) is 8130 feet, which is 470 ft lower than average for its class. Top speed comes in at 165 knots, or 14% faster than the average mid-size helicopter.

Rotors are very unique

Pakistan has signed a contract with Leonardo-Finmeccanica for an undisclosed number of AW139 intermediate twin engine helicopters to be used for transport and EMS missions.

This event sets a major milestone for Leonardo and further expands the already successful presence of the AW139 and other models in the Country.

Pakistan is one of several nations who have chosen or are already operating the AW139 for a range of government roles including Italy, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Thailand to name a few.

The new generation AW139 sets new standards in the market with advanced technology and class leading performance, reliability, safety, versatility and cabin space. The aircraft has outstanding one engine inoperative capabilities, even in hot and high operating conditions, making it ideally suited to operate in harsh high temperature and high altitude environments. The advanced integrated cockpit minimises pilot workload, allowing the crew to concentrate on mission objectives.

Bad effing move, unless they got TOT. That's the only time this much $$$$ for each heli make sense.

@MastanKhan : Here's another example of the bad planning. This heli costs about 10-14 million Euros, meaning $ 14-18 million USD. Pakistan could've built it internally for this much per heli cost by paying the Turks and the Chinese for their Atak and Z-18 and Z-20 TOT. You could buy used F-16's for this much, which is a more critical need for the PAF, and spend a couple of millions more to get the STAR/LIFT and MLU!!

I don't know why these guys keep making bad decisions!! For this much money, if flying at a height was an issue, the Russians would've sold you upgraded and newer KA's, MI's, etc and 1.5 heli's for each one of these. You could've also received slightly used Black Hawks for this price tag. These heli's are single purpose only and can't be used in combat either. Very expensive bad move. I don't want to sound like IK and start crying corruption. But this deal doesn't make sense and may have a lobby or love ($$$$) component to it.

Z-20 is not coming for sometime and we need helicopters now. Italy is best source for really advance helicopters.

Separate budgets for separate systems. As well, requirements and capabilities are also taken into consideration.

This is also likely for a government need, not so much for military.

Thanks for you concern, but I think I'm going to side with the government on this one.

Edit: Fixed reply @Zarvan I didn't mean to reply to you, I thought I was replying to @Viper0011.

Z20 would be a excellent addition when it is available and offered.

Why do you need such an advance helicopter when this is really a transport heli? The only thing it has that others don't have in Pakistani inventory, is that it flies high to like 15000+ feet. But you could've paid the Russians to give you heavier / upgraded MI's, or Z-18's. You wold get almost 2 heli's for the cost of one. And in China's case, licensed manufacturing inside Pakistan!! And remember, these are NOT combat heli's, so they just do a single role only.

Why spend so much money in acquiring a new system that you really didn't need? At the least, MI's have a rebuild plant soon to be opened in Pakistan. So it would be cheaper in price and cheaper to maintain. The Chinese option would've come with local manufacturing so that's never bad. Slightly used black hawks can be used for both, troop carrying and lighter combat load-outs so you'd at the least use them in dual role to justify this huge cost. $ 14-18 million per piece!!!! That's crazy for a country like Pakistan and especially, when you could've maintained or even licensed built another platform internally!!

Its not about affording it. Your country has started to grow but the money doesn't grow on trees. Plus, when you could be maintaining or licensed building something else, why spend twice as much money for a much more expensive platform? The Chinese would've sold you licensed production of their Z-18 or Z-20 in Pakistan. The Russians would've sold you MI's upgraded close to half the price and brand new!!

If these were jets and you paid $ 75 million for Rafale or EFT, vs. $ 60 million for F-16, block 52, I'd be saying, this was a better deal, even with the $ 25 million gap a pop. But this deal makes no sense. The "technology" used in these jets isn't anything special, all new heli's come with night vision, thermal imaging and heavier engines for heights (in this case, for almost half the cost)!

Pak / Subcontinent folks and TOT, why would LM Boeing etc give someone complete TOT

I think this term is over used by indo-pak
secondly go and read on "offsets"
