Sania-Shoaib’s ‘mingling’ earns them fatwa

Just in case you thought Sania Mirza-Shoaib Malik had put all their hurdles behind them and could now focus on a dream reception on April 15, here’s another celebration dampener.

The couple is now faced with a fatwa for ‘mingling freely’ before their marriage was solemnised. Hyderabad’s Sunni Ulma Board – a group of religious scholars (Aalim) – has called upon the community to boycott the April 15 reception.

General Secretary of the religious board Moulana Haseebul Hasan Siddiqui said Sania and Shoaib had been indulging in behaviour that was forbidden by religion. “They are living together and addressing the media together. This is haram in Islam,” he said. He felt that they were bringing disrepute to the community and were, because of their celebrity, a bad influence on the younger generation.

Soon after the fatwa was issued, Sania’s public relations consultant Rucha Nayar (who is also her cousin) told media persons that Shoaib had not been staying with the Mirzas.

In her daily bulletin, she said, “There has been some misunderstanding. The groom has not been staying at the Mirza residence for the last few days. His mother and other family members are residing at the Mirza residence as guests.”

Media reports have said that Shoaib has been staying at Sania’s house since he came to Hyderabad on April 2. Sources said he reportedly drove directly there on arrival. They have been shown dancing and exercising together on television. They have also been out together a couple of times.

Mumbai Mirror had reported that the tennis star and cricketer signed their nikaahnama on Friday but were keeping it under wraps. As per the Shariat, the bride and groom can see each other only once before marriage.

It may also help that Sania’s father Imran Mirza is expected to appear before the religious scholars of the Ulma Board to explain that security concerns had prompted him to keep Shoaib at home instead of at a hotel.

Interestingly, this ‘settlement’ too has to take place at a mosque on Road No. 12, Banjara Hills, near the house of Ayesha Siddiqui, whom Shoaib divorced last week after much controversy.

The fatwa culture among some Muslims is very annoying. Kahin par bhi aa jata hain fatwa le kar. Why don't the educated Muslims protest against these Moulanas and their fatwas?

But what is the conclusion of this fatwah?

what these Maulvi Saab wants?
