End sale of defence equipment to Pakistan: Think-tank to United States

As Pakistan grows economically, it will be the same for them. The bad past will start to fade away, supplemented by some lobbyists in the West :enjoy:.

You are conceptually quite clear and focussed about the fact that
The ECONOMY is the MOST IMPORTANT THING

BEST of LUCK from Me ; The plan is good at least on paper

But as many analysts have noted before that Pakistani economy will not grow
until it puts to rest this futile conflict with Afghanistan and India

Just hope that your Favourite Nawaz Sharif does not land you in a Debt trap

But you must see that this Report has been written by Council for Foreign Relations
which has a standing and importance of its own

You do have a point, CFR isn't just your ordinary think-tank run by PhD students, it is probably the biggest think-tank with anchors across the US government.

Think Tanks do research and advocacy to direct government policies, most of their work isn't paid for directly by organizations, but if some company is financing 30% of your budget well then...

The US government has it's own Think Tanks budgeted from it's treasury. It's one thing for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the US to say Pakistan is an important ally in the WoT, but there will always be reservations within the government. This is probably just a tact in response to Gen. Sharif's visit.

In the long term its obvious that USA and Indian interests will converge and the expense pf Pakistan.

I think when the WOT ends and USA pull out of Afghnistan I think USA will stop support for Pakistan.

I think the USA has already lost faith in Pakistan after OBL raid.

99% of Pakistanis losing USA to indian lobby is their worst nitemare ... if its not it should be because even the chinease don't give you billions $$$ in aid.

@Oscar @haviZsultan @Horus @Viper0011. @MastanKhan

Hey propagandist.....here, read the article and the associated discussion on the following. The report didn't recommend the US to end anything to Pakistan, nor did it say to leverage shiit against the Pakistani military. Watch the links and I am posting the discussion underneath the link. Its fukking paid propaganda by the Indians!!! You people lie so much that its shameful!!!

Its an Indian propaganda posted on Indian sites like IBN and this Indian site: Defence News, End sale of defence equipment to Pakistan: US think-tank

Here's the discussion. See an American totally calling your bullshiit in that article. And the second one calling your crap out here. You guys just have all kinds of body-aches when Pakistan and US relations start to strengthen. Don't cry, eat a pie

No, the COFR report did not say this. All the articles on this report have misrepresented its contents significantly.

Adithya Kumar The COFR report did not recommend outright ending of support, but the use of that possibility as leverage with the Pakistani military.

The other article's title "India now matters to US interests in virtually every field" is not from the COFR report. I searched for the phrase, found it only in a few Indian media sites.

Ahead of the visit of Pakistan army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, a top US think-tank on Friday asked the Obama Administration to end sale of any defence equipment to the country if it is not willing to "rein in terror". "The US should demand that Pakistan meet its obligations as a state to tackle terrorism emanating from its territory, in both India and Afghanistan," the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a top American think-tank, said in a report. "If Pakistan is not willing to rein in terror, Washington should be prepared, at minimum, to end US taxpayer funding for defence equipment sales and reimbursement of coalition support funds," CFR said in the report prepared by top American thinkers drawn from various sectors including Alyssa Ayres, Ajay Banga, Nicholas Burns, Ashley Tellis, Charles R Kaye, among others.
Recognising the challenge to US-India relations posed by US policy toward Pakistan, as well as the drag on India's rise presented by the risk of conflict with Pakistan, the Task Force report recommends that India for the sake of its own future pursue an improved relationship with Pakistan. In parallel, the Task Force asked the US to demand that Pakistan tackle terrorism and prepare to cease US funding for defence sales and coalition support funds should Pakistan prove unwilling, said Richard N Hass, CFR president. The US is planning to sell eight new f-16 fighter jets to Pakistan. The new fighter planes will add to Pakistan's sizeable force of fighter jets which include more than 70 F-16s and dozens of French and Chinese attack aircraft.
In its more than 90-page report, the Task Force found that US policy towards Pakistan is one of the main challenges to India-US relationship. Indian officials remain skeptical that the US can ever fully be trusted as a security partner when they see Washington appear to acquiesce to Islamabad's continued inaction on terror groups that have targeted India and the US, the report said.
The CFR report comes days before Gen Sharif's visit to the US during which he is likely to meet top American defence, military and political leadership.

Oh really... first learn the dynamics of Pakistan purchase items from U.S. Pakistan never request US govt directly. This is DOD / Pentagon who requested military equipment for Pakistan to U.S. Govt. Pakistan military has 40 + years old relations with the Pentagon. Indians are kakay bachay in this they don't even know Pakistan military has NOTHING TO DO with U.S. goverment in terms of military to military relations. India request or getting offer for the military equipment from US Government not military, DOD, Pentagon etc.

These Indian media kutay bilay type bakwaas listening all the time with no credible source nothingexcept Times of India, NDTV etc... what is this bullshit TOP US THINK TANK ? since when pentagon listening this bullshit type top kutab ila indian (so called US) think tank ?

Just example: Kiyani requested for the up-gradation of cobras in 2009/10 while met with Mike Mullen.. and US military establishment made case behalf of Pakistan to sell AH1Z presented in front of the govt. India Media is BC nothing else more...

God bless this think tank....We Pakistani do not want their shit. Please for God sake put a ban on selling weapons to Pakistan so that we can focus on indigenous development and look elsewhere e.g. Russia, China etc. Though, some numb minds in PAF would still keep pushing for F-16.
US banned sale of F-16 in late 80s or early 90s, and we developed ballistic missiles and JF-17. Please do that favour again and we will get independent and self-reliant.

You don't have a problem with article except that it was published by an Indian media outlet. The issue seems to be with the report put out by the Council on Foreign Relations, which is not some "bullshit TOP US THINK TANK" but very influential in both policy circles and government.

What are you saying that Pakistan military has no dealing with US government? That's absurd. he US Military is not a separate branch of the government. US Military is under the control of Department of Defence, which, in turn, is a branch of the US government. The US President is called commander-in-chief for a reason.

LOL the trip will later result in selling or gifting more militarily equipment to Pakistan just like Air Chief visit resulted in 8 F16s:D

Must be careful about these bozos. Remember larry pressler? he was a nobody too just like these think tanks. He wanted to make a quick career move and he did it at Pakistan's expense.

Council of Foreign Relations is not some no name think tank that is out to make a name for itself because it does not have to, it's well respected within policy and government circles. Their words carry weight.

Larry Pressler anti-Pakistan amendments didn't help him at all, he lost the election anyway.
