UAE SAAB AWACS - New Order

So who/what else, in terms of a direct threat to the UAE/GCC?

No, it wouldn't be a shame, and will not happen. I don't believe anyone in influential military positions has expected (or expects) the UAE or Saudi Arabia to step into a military conflict between India and Pakistan, certainly not in the last decade or so - And please don't take this as criticizm - I don't fault the Saudis and Emiratis for taking such a position

If the UAE and Saudis were really that interested in assisting Pakistan in a conflict with India, a much more effective means of showing support would be to assist Pakistan in conventional weapons acquisitions. Claiming that these two countries would choose to declare war against India (in case of a Pakistan India war) and send their citizens to die for Pakistan comes much, much later. -
Well boots on the ground? Can't say. Air to Air refuelers, AWACS, ASW support - no comment :-)

The UAE Air Force and Air Defence (UAE AF & AD) signed a USD1.27 billion contract for the procurement of two new Saab surveillance aircraft and the upgrade of two others, the company said on 9 November.

The contract, which was announced at the Dubai Airshow 2015, will see the UAE receive two of the latest versions of Saab's Erieye airborne surveillance systems fitted aboard Bombardier Global 6000 business jet host aircraft, as well as the upgrade of the country's two existing Erieye systems that are fitted to Saab 340 turboprops.

As noted by Saab, the new Swing Role Surveillance System (SRSS) being procured by the UAE is the most advanced version of the Erieye system to date, in that it will provide surveillance capabilities over air, land, and sea. "This is a significant step forward in capability, in that it is effectively a combined AWACS [Airborne Warning And Control System], JSTARS [Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System], and MPA [maritime patrol aircraft] in one," a company representative told IHS Jane's .

Although not confirmed by either Saab or the UAE, it is understood that the two Erieye systems that have been in service since 2010 will be upgraded to this same standard.

Saab did not reveal delivery timelines for the new contract, citing a request for confidentiality from the customer, not did it provide details of the SRSS system beyond an aircraft model that showed it to be based on the same dorsal 'plank' antenna configuration as the baseline Erieye. This baseline Erieye features an electronic-warfare suite that includes electronic support, threat-warning and countermeasures dispensing subsystems, an identification friend or foe (IFF) subsystem, command-and-control (C2) capabilities, and a ground-based mission trainer.

A company representative told IHS Jane's that the SRSS will not necessarily become the new baseline version of the Erieye to be offered to all future customers, as not every operator will have the need for such an advanced capability.

Original Saab press release in regards to the recent order of AWACS from the UAE

Defence and security company Saab has signed a contract with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to expand and enhance the Emirates’ airborne surveillance capabilities. Saab will deliver a new airborne Swing Role Surveillance System (SRSS) incorporating a new version of the Saab Erieye radar system. The order value amounts to approximately USD1.27 billion.

The new SRSS for the UAE uses the Global 6000 aircraft from Bombardier as a platform. The Swing Role Surveillance System is capable of simultaneous detection and tracking of multiple targets in the air, on land and at sea. It is the latest evolution of the Erieye system that incorporates Saab’s many decades of radar capabilities across all domains.

“The new version of Erieye is without a doubt the most capable airborne early warning and control system on the market. Saab’s capability to develop high technology solutions for customers shows that our focus on research and development is the right way to ensure continued competitiveness on the defence market,” says Håkan Buskhe, President and CEO of Saab.

"Saab understands the vital importance of advanced airborne surveillance and we have a family of products that play a key role in defence and civil security. The UAE’s selection of Saab’s solution confirms our strong position regarding airborne surveillance and systems integration,” says Micael Johansson, head of Saab Business Area Electronic Defence Systems.

The work will be carried out at Saab's facilities in Gothenburg, Linköping, Järfälla, Arboga, Luleå and Centurion (South Africa).

one jet that the uae could have benefited from is having a jet that purely for ground surveillance.
and a good example of this is the Raf sentinel. this is because of the uae's current engagements would need a jet of this capacity. the new order for two awacs does have a ground surveillance capability as you can see at the bottom of the jet but a dedicated platform would deliver the best results

Meaning...? You are going to recommend, it be considered? If so what numbers?

@Blue Marlin You surprise me sometimes!!! What they have ordered is a swing role system, meaning it can do surveillance on land, sea or air, i.e. what ever the situation requires. Do look at the belly of the Global 6000 you have posted.
mentioned it already. last sentence.
here it is.
the new order for two awacs does have a ground surveillance capability as you can see at the bottom of the jet but a dedicated platform would deliver the best results

somebody needs to read before they post.
anyway i make a good point having a dedicated ground surveillance aircraft would be even more beneficial than a dual use jet. as you already have a dedicated air surveillance awacs, the Saab 340

They went with European because of the degree of customization offered.

UAE AIR FORCE ANNOUNCES US$1.27 BILLION DEAL WITH SAAB

Aircraft and new to market operating systems purchased at the Dubai Airshow

The United Arab Emirates Air Force has today signed a purchase agreement with Swedish Aerospace firm Saab at Dubai Airshow, worth US$1.27 billion. The deal will see the UAE purchase two new Global 6000 long-range surveillance aircraft, featuring brand new to market operating systems, while a further two Saab 340 jets already in UAE ownership will undergo systems upgrades.

Unveiling the deal at the Dubai Airshow this afternoon, Major General Abdullah Al Hashimi said: “I am really happy to announce the first deal that has been signed between the United Arab Emirates Air Force and Saab Industrial this year, to buy two new aircrafts for the amount of US$1.27 billion. By buying two new aircraft, and upgrading two existing aircraft, we are very happy to continue our relationship with Saab.”

In response, Saab Group President and CEO, Håkan Buskhe, said: “We are an extremely proud supplier to the UAE Air Force, and we think, in cooperation with the UAE Air Force, that this deal is the start of something new. The new platform offers increased endurance and a newly developed suite of sensors that the UAE will be the launch customer for. This will be a game changer for surveillance capability going forward.”

While a time frame for the deal is still to be formally agreed, the UAE says it expects to take delivery of the aircraft, which have air-to-air, ground-to-air and air-to-sea capability, in around two years time.

The deal was welcomed by Michele van Akelijen, Managing Director of Dubai Airshow organisers F&E Aerospace, who said: “The Dubai Airshow is at the forefront of the aviation industry and this agreement demonstrates once again that is a place to do business. We are seeing a huge military presence at the show this year and we are pleased that it is once again the choice of those looking to make significant and ground-breaking deals.”

UAE uses about 80 F-16E/F block 60 (with some 25 more recently ordered) and about 70 Mirage 2000. The UAE has asked Eurofighter, Boeing and Dassault for proposals for a next generation fighter. That means Typhoon, F-35 and Rafale. I don't see how Gripen would offer advantage over those as Mirage replacement and I don't see it replacing the F-16s either.
Slight correction, 30 were ordered.
