JF-17 Thunder Multirole Fighter [Thread 6]

Hi,

The technical answer of one missile is in the interview-----.

F16 have internal fuel of ~4K liter and JF-17 have internal fuel of 3K liter.
F16 have more drag, Weight and thirsty engine wrt to JF-17. So there will be approximately equivalent range.
Even F16 could carry only 1 Anti Ship missiles because it has to carry 2 fuel tanks.

This will be the ideal configuration in my view (After having IFR):

From the Dubai 2011 presentations below:

Internal fuel = (2,300/0.84) = 2,738l.

External fuel = 3,000l.

Total fuel = 5,738l.

Now, this will give 1,000km range in an A2G configuration.

If you loose both the 1,100l tanks, you get rid of 1,848kg, and add 1,600kg from the two missiles. You end up 248kg lighter.

You loose the 4 x 250kg bombs = 1,000kg. You add the 2 x 200kg SD-10s. This is 600kg lighter.

In total you are now 848kg lighter.

Back to the fuel: 5,738l = 1,000km radius.

2,200l less 5,738l means 3,538l = ((3,538/5,738)*1000km) = 617km with CM-400 AKG

I have ignored the weight differences and focused on fuel.

A combat radius of 617+ km with 2 x SD10 + 2 x CM 400 AKG + 1 x 800l tank

Is that correct?

* PL5s are still missing

Still, the combat range will be greater than 617 km even when 2 x PL5s are added.

Including the PL-5s

@MastanKhan

2 x PL5 + 2 x SD10 + 2 x CM 400 AKG + 1 x 800l tank

JFT with the above configuration will have a combat radius of ~ 800 km. This means that it can fly to the farthest point of our EEZ from the coastline with that configuration and return back.

Add IFR and you have a decent CAP of our coastal area or better range (giving flexibility to tactics e.g coming in for a kill from the west) in this config..

A JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) No. 26 "Black Spiders" squadron landing at PAF Base Peshawar.

This approach is super risky and dangerous. Peshawer is right next to Afghanistan and there are plenty of AA guns and other munitions that can be used to attack this jet at such lower speed and super high visibility. I recently came across an article that showed AA guns caught by the FC in this area, those were being smuggled from Afghanistan with heavy shells too and in hundreds.

I thought that after the PAF were attacked, they had changed these approach and surroundings and was securing then all the way???

But it doesn't have fuel for any dog fight or serious maneuvering, if it was out by 300 miles towards the end of the EEZ. It can still hit all IN vessels, I get that and that's a huge shift from where Pakistan's capability was, but still, you need more range. And thus, I agree with MK, more fuel carrying capability or heavies are needed. The JFT has a HUGE role and a critical one inside Pakistan's borders as all borders are within 45-1 hour flight from the main air bases. But for the navy, you need something else, like a J-11D or SU-35 (if it can happen), or even J-10B in numbers.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply----. We need to get out of this ' decent ' kind of mindset---. We desperately need something right in your face kind of----we need deep strike and heavy---that can carry a load of at least 4 Cm400's----.

This range is not enough---JF 17 is not " enough " of an aircraft for the protection of Karachi and its assets----.

Our strikers must be able to target Mumbai and poona-----.

Exactly. The question is, whether or not the range of a JF-17 with a weapon configuration shown below plus 370 kg (the weight added by exchanging YJ-8 s with CM 400 AKG s) is enough to conduct air support/strike missions for PN in every possible/expected scenario.

@RASHID MEHMOOD @Oscar

I would appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

Masroor Air Base has some 16-18 of these.
