1979 - SSG & Saudi Forces reclaim the Grand Mosque from 500 terrorists.

i read somewhere french special forces also took part in th op

Initially it was french special forces who were going to conduct the operation and Pak's SSG forces was kept on high alert & ready. Later decision was changed due to no permission to non Muslims in holy mosque and SSG was called in to do the operation. French and Egyptian special forces acted as adviser.
Definitely a proud moment for our forces :pakistan:

Definately. :)

An elite unit called "Rahbar" of the SSG, the commando battalion of the Pakistan Army, headed by Major Pervez Musharraf now a Retired General of Pakistan Army and Ex-President of Pakistan, was mobilized and SSG commandos were rushed to Mecca from Pakistan on Saudi Government's request.[1] In the middle of the day, Saudi troops abseiled from helicopters directly into the central courtyard of the mosque.

Wrong information, Musharraf wasn't took part in it.

Damn 500 insurgents thats alot still they managed to take em down.. Bosslike ;)

500 is an exaggaration. The insurgents brought their families and children with them as well.

So the actual Insurgents numbered around 150-200 and rest were non-combatants.

All of them were eliminated.

just a clarification. about 61 terrorists were arrested and keeping the tradition of taking no prisoners . all of these terrorists were beheaded. since then the terrorists lost the appetite of launching attacks against KSA. the treatment of the terrorists was in stark contrast to what the Pakistani judges did to Lal Masjid occupants. who are seen as the heroes

Al-Qahtani was killed in the recapture of the mosque but Juhayman, and 67 of his fellow rebels survived the assault and were captured. "All the surviving males" were tried secretly.[7][37] They were not shown leniency.[38] The king secured a fatwa (edict) from the Council of Senior Scholars[7][37] which found the defendants guilty of seven crimes:

  • violating the Masjid al-Haram's (the Grand Mosque's) sanctity;
  • violating the sanctity of the month of Muharram;
  • killing fellow Muslims;
  • disobeying legitimate authorities;
  • suspending prayer at Masjid al-Haram;
  • erring in identifying the Mahdi;
  • exploiting the innocent for criminal acts.[39][40]
On 9 January 1980, 63 rebels were publicly beheaded in the squares of eight Saudi cities[37] (Buraidah, Dammam, Mecca, Medina, Riyadh, Abha, Ha'il and Tabuk). According to Sandra Mackey, the locations "were carefully chosen not only to give maximum exposure but, one suspects, to reach other potential nests of discontent."[38]

Riaz Haq - 1979 superb accomplishment of Major Pervez... | Facebook

979 superb accomplishment of Major Pervez Musharraf who cleared the Grand Mosque of Makkah of insurgents: An elite unit called "Rahbar" of the SSG, the commando battalion of the Pakistan Army, headed by Major Pervez Musharraf, was mobilized and SSG commandos were rushed to Mecca from Pakistan on Saudi Government's request. In the middle of the day, Saudi troops abseiled from helicopters directly into the central courtyard of the mosque. The Saudi soldiers were picked off by insurgents holding superior positions. After failure of this exercise, Pakistani SSG Commandos split/showered the water allover the Grand Masjid floors even in Minarets. This situation was very surprising for the insurgents that what was going to be happen next. On having water all over the floors of the Grand Masjid, Pak Army Commandos released the electric current in the water and insurgent suspended their activities and start changing their positions to save them from the electric shocks. During this Pak Army Commandos were dropped by helicopters into the Grand Masjid in different locations and they easily captured many of the insurgents alive.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Mosque_Seizure

I don't think that Musharraf took part in that operation an he was a colonel in 1979 not Major.

Exactly.

Saudis cracked down hard on terrorists wiping them out completely.

Where Pakistanis tolerated this nonsense for far too long and when they took action there was little or no appetite to deal with these terrorists harshly.

Pakistan needs a secular strong man to fix that place up.

for me Lal Masjid is nothing compared to Grand mosque. if an operation could be conducted in Grand Mosuqe then why not Red Mosque which became like a Zarar Mosque of conspiracy. if it was up to me I would have executed every single terrorist and that Mullah Aziz and raised that mosque to the ground which even today is frequented by fanatic sectarian members and pro TTP elements

Exactly you are right. I think it is a miss consumption spreading here. :) Musharraf commanded rehbar batallion(2nd cdo batallion) of ssg and he was a part of this batallion .He didnt took part in 1979 operation of grand mosque. There is no sign in his book "In the line of fire" about his presence in 1979 operation..

A little bit off Topic, but this is a nice Video from an old ERA, who knows and can remember to this song :-)

My country, the lighthouse of guidance (Old Saudi Arabian video)

This entire episode is shrouded in mystery.

Saudis claim they conducted the entire operation themselves.

Pakistanis claim they were main offensive force which conducted the operation.

Europeans and Americans claim it was the French Special Forces which led the attack.

Not sure what to believe.
Yeah, the only official information I could find were some US embassy documents which didn't mention who conducted the operation.
The narrative is that a few French GIGN Commandos temporarily converted to Islam (yeah, sounds unlikely doesn't it) and then flooded the chambers and used electricity to flush out the militants.
It is much more likely, in my opinion, that Pakistani SSG commandos were the ones who did it. If French were present, they were there as advisers and not actual combatants as the story of French commandos temporarily converting to Islam is not exactly plausible.
