ALIGARH: Religion does not matter when it comes to becoming the prime minister and a Muslim can get the top job provided he is the most capable person for it, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said here on Monday.

"It is not about what religion or community you come from, it is what you bring to the table, what capability you have," he said in an interaction with students of the Aligarh Muslim University.

He was replying to a question that having come a long way after Independence how much more time will it take for India to have its first Muslim prime minister.

"Today, Manmohan Singh is not the Prime Minister of India because he is a Sikh. He is the Prime Minister because he is the most capable person to do the job.

"And let me tell you something that even when you do have a Muslim prime minister, he will be a prime minister because he is the most capable person," 39-year-old Gandhi said.

He told a questioner, "You need to step up and the number of leaders coming out of your community needs to go up. You got today a Sikh prime minister that nobody would have ever imagined in a country of over a billion people that we would have a Sikh prime minister. Sikhs are a very small percentage of this country."

Gandhi said his effort was to involve people from different communities and from different parts of India in the political system.

Exhorting Muslim youths to participate in national politics in a big way, Gandhi said, "Increased participation of Muslim youths is the ideal way to take on problems not only of the Muslim community but the country as a whole."

He said it was unfortunate that today there was hardly any young Muslim leader active in national politics.

Earlier, Gandhi was given a rousing reception on his arrival at the AMU campus. He first drove to the grave of AMU founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan to pay tributes.

The Aligarh Muslim University Teachers' Association, which also hosted a reception in his honour, described his visit as "historic" and called Gandhi "the modern face of Congress party in India."

Capability is not bound by a religion...and this has been proven right by great people across the globe ...every now and then....

For a community to grow and progress...it is absolutely important for someone from that community to come and take the challenge of representing the community.... The only challenge that Muslims in India face right now is that there are no good leaders who can glue the community together and create an inertia to enable he community to get going.

The only instance in the Indian History that gelling happened was when Muhammad Ali Jinnah....lead Muslims from the front....and I doubt there has been any leader here in India as visionary as Him....

Muslims need a leader who can motivate the youth...who can challenge the community to perform like never before....India Muslims have lost a lot of ground to other communities...and they need to work double time to become an important part of Indian Fabric.

Religion has no play in this. India is a Secular State. Its current Prime minister is a Sikh, its most powerfull politician is a women and Roman Catholic and Its last country president (2007) and architect of the missile and space techlonogy is Muslim. So we dont need Rahul Gandhi to endorse this. Its a know fact in India that whoever is capable Succeeds and its not bound to religion. Offcourse there are alwasy oppositions and unwanted elements in every nation. Without Opposition there aint no Democracy.

IF an Indian muslim will become a PM, he will because he is a leader for all Indians like Maulana Azad or APJ Abdul Kalam. Not because he focussed on just muslims like Jinnah and leave the rest.

Hope, in the future if an Indian muslim becomes PM, he/she is not made so like our current President has been chosen. He/ She should be capable and respected by all sections of the society including, if possible, even the right wingers; somebody like our beloved former President Sir APJ Abdul Kalam.

Yeah ............We know that a Muslim can become a PM of India according to India's Constitution. So what the Point :pop:

Not because he focussed on just muslims like Jinnah and leave the rest.:blah::blah:
EjazR You must know that Muhammad Ali Jinnah was member of congress. What made him to leave congress.....other debate.

What If Rahul himself become a Muslim? :coffee:

APJ Abdul Kalam was respected by right wingers because he was Hindu in practice and Muslim only in name. Believing Muslims consider him as murtad(apostate)

I never heard of that. but pm singh is a practicing sikh yaar

unnecesary comment by rahul. as a secular nation such things are by default

Jinnah focused on the people who were being oppressed. You want Jinnah to support people who were oppressing Muslims of India? I think not. So take your cheap shots some where else.

Yes, but there are doubts that India is a secular state. The moderate people of India want it to be, but it is not necessarily is.

Yes the moderate and majority and myself love india secular. All nations have a minority which oppose. Opposition makes a great democracy. But hey how would you know. You are always ruled my military sheiks.

End of the day what counts is facts. And the fact is that people in Indian leadership are of various relegions and also various ethnicities.

Jinnah pre1937 was wholly different from post 1938. Post 1938 he was not concerned of India as a whole.(Some may even question his wisdom to muslim cause as well). Unlike Maulana Azad, Iqbal or Sir Syed who championed Muslim causes but also Indian cause as a whole.
Anyways, I didn't expect to Jinnah come up in this thread and that's a completely different topic

APJ Abdul Kalam was respected by right wingers because he was Hindu in practice and Muslim only in name. Believing Muslims consider him as murtad(apostate)
Is that what right wing extremists think to make themselves happy?

One of his strong points was that he didn't always project himself overtly to be muslim only and concerned himself with the entire nation. Do you want him to keep announcing that he is a muslim?

Anyways, here are some pics of him attending Jummah prayer and I don't see any Muslim considering him apostate so sorry your thought is a big fail. REst assured as you can see muslims across the board are quite proud of him.
