New Delhi, Aug 13: On Monday, The Indian Navy's iconic former warship INS Vikrant took a rebirth in Kochi. Soon, after its launch, the images of India's home-built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant went viral on the Internet and they were shared in the online world. The whole country is elated with the launch of the warship INS Vikrant, as it has put India in the list of nations having warships. Before inaugurating the aircraft, the Defence Minister AK Antony broke a coconut, that is a ritual in India, performed before any auspicious event.

Although the INS Vikrant is being discussed everywhere, but very few are aware of the fact that once, this aircraft gave a 'nightmare' to the neighbouring country, Pakistan. And there is no doubt, that this time, too, it must have left Pakistan sweating! Lets turn the pages of history and take a glimpse at the INS Vikrant (R11) that is still and forever be remembered by the Indian for its distinguished service. Here, we are talking about that Vikrant , that was purchased by India in 1957 from the United Kingdom(UK). Then, it was commissioned in the Indian Navy fleet on March 4 1961 by the then Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vijaylaxmi Pandit.

It was the warship, on which dozens of aircrafts could take off simultaneously and helicopters could land. In 1961, the INS Vikrant (R11) became India's first aircraft carrier. The fact to be noted, here, is that it played a crucial role in enforcing the naval blockade on East Pakistan during the Indo-Pak war of 1971. The construction of INS Vikrant was first done by the UK's Royal Navy in the form of HMS Hercules (R 49) and on November 12, 1943, it was laid down in the River Tyne.It was launched on September 22, 1945 but, it's construction work was suspended in May 1946 due to the end of World War II. The first Commanding Officer of this carrier, that joined the Bombay unit of the Indian Navy, on November 3 1961, was Captain Pritam Singh. It was re-deployed towards Chittagong during India-Pakistan war of 1971.

In 1965, Pakistan even claimed that it had sunk the Vikrant. But, at that time, the ship was undergoing some modifications. According to the Naval Intelligence reports, the Pakistan Navy's all attempts to launch an attack on INS Vikrant went in vain on December 4, 1971. Then Pakistan Navy deployed its special submarine named PNS Ghazi- to target and sink the INS Vikrant. But before it could reach Vishakhapatnam to incapacitate Vikrant, the another India's cruiser, INS Rajput (D141) sank off the PNS Ghazi due to depth charges. The Navy crew deployed on the INS Vikrant left Pakistan's Navy sweating and successfully foiled their unscrupulous attempts. For this, the Navy's crew of Vikrant was rewarded with two Mahavir Chakras and 12 Veer Chakras. Presently, the INS Vikrant (R11), that is recognized for its commendable services, is preserved as a maritime museum in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai.

And that's bullcr@p..

Only thing is killer aircraft carrier missiles weren't around then, or maybe around but not as good or sophisticated as they are now.

Times have changed Pakistan option is to have coastal anti ship/carrier missiles units and a strong naval air wing.

Historically India was and is not in position to bring carrier in battle field . Its more symbolic rather a strategic value. When lots of small and lethal weapon exist in the market. Only US has the best security for its battle group. Rest of the nation can t not afford , what US can afford.
After reading this article our members might start again , about Pak need of A Carrier , but Pakistan don t need it. When Pak has capability of carrying carrier killer. Last year US govt spend 540 million dollar on single regular maintanence of its one aircraft carrier. Any nation can afford this ?

Well Now Vikrant will have modern air defence systems, which can be pretty good, though not equal to Americans, We after all have ventures with Russian and Israelis to co-operate on Missile and Air defence.

Actually India will never need to bring its Aircraft Carrier's into play to attack chinese/pakistan mainland. IAF is more than enough to carry out strikes in Pakistan/China. Indian Navy's Aircraft Carriers are tasked to implement Naval blockades in times of war.

In Pakistan's context an aircraft carrier is rather useless to India unless its in the Persian Gulf, then it can attack from behind, otherwise i dont see how the AC will change anything.
Its just an expensive toy which the Pakistanis will try to destroy to demoralize India and Indians will keep far away from the battlefield (In my Opinion)

A well stocked CBG is a formidable blockade tool...

I hope that when India decided to rebuild Vikrant, countermeasures were already taken by Pakistan Navy. At this moment we can say nothing but only full scale war will decide which side planned & played well.

You have your version, we have ours. There are only 2 ways to know what exactly happened:

1. A direct account from one of the crew of the submarine (It's not possible as they all died)
2. You need to believe what the Indian Navy (which sunk it) says.

Other than that anything more is a pure conspiracy theory/ fiction by all know who.

:omghaha:

Again Usual rants from indian media........ Now navy claimed it sunk the indian carrier is epic ......

In 71 the indians had docked their carrier in Port Blair because it was always a high target for navy.....Even their navy because of PNS Ghazi hadnt even launched it. After she got sunk that too from internal explosion then indians moved the ship.

LOL its epic as how the indian media brainwashes its people with lies.

Vikrant is a threat and PN needs to build enough Babur Cruise Missiles, Anti-Ship and RAAD missiles to strike the carrier hard in case of a conflict. Offense is the best defence and history has shown that carriers can be destroyed. Long Live Pakistan
