NEW DELHI: At 7am when other children are already up and preparing to begin their day, Sulekha lies down to sleep. She was up all night because there wasn't any vacant bed in the room and sleeping outside in this biting cold was out of the question.


The UN has warned of widespread shortages of food and water if India's demographic growth does not slow down.


We are seriously overpopulated and we will never be able to grow with this huge burden. It's a threat for our survival.

What you said is exactly what we want to do. Our middle class now is 350 million soon will be 800 by 2030 and 1.2 bilion by 2040. Resources is not a problem as India has enough coal in India and we are buying coal mines all over the world. For iron and steel we have the worlds second largest reserves worth 1.8 trillion$ bought for 15 billion in afghanistan. We are buying not resources but entire mines in afghan and africa. Indian investment in africa has crossed 90 billion $. And this is just the beginning.

Our future energy needs will be fullfilled by 3 stage nuclear program, for which we have 30% of worlds thorium. We are investing heavily in renewable energy and soon will be 3rd largest users of clean energy.

Rare earth metals can be easily sourced from China and australia. We have no sanctions like you guys. Our agriculture growth is 4%. We are exporters of agricultural products.

Land and water could be problem, but i believe with time we will find solutions to that. The entire world will face resource crunch. IF both Indians and chinese stary living the life of americans then the world will need many saudi arabias. For automobiles we have to shift to electric vehicles. India is currently 2nd largest manufacturer of electric vehicles and 5th largest overall, expected to be 3rd overall by 2017.
