Avalanche traps about 150 Pakistani soldiers

post videos if you find link?
Can't find on youtube, was just watching on ARY.
In my opinion full recovery is not plausible until summer thaw.. Saw a pic where guys using rotory saw to cut ice!!
I would bet in two weeks time. The snow...or the piece of broken glacier as it was...is tough and takes hard work to break down.

Na koi Harrtaal, Na koi Soag,

Abu Zulfiqar almost gave us a scare there!!!

nahhh it wasn't a scare. I said i dont know where is he, but if he is stationed there at the moment then hope he's safe

which - since i see his name on here i assume he's alive and healthy - which is good for us :)

praying that whatever happens, the recovery mission takes place without further weather disruptions and without further disasters

It would be wise to plan for adverse weather as well as persistent dangers to rescuers. Both are givens for that terrain and environment.

im sure they have....in fact not all equipment and sensors were even brought in until the weather conditions improved......no further risks are being taken, they are doing simply what they CAN do at this time. What more can they do? Regular jawans were digging with their hands and with makeshift tools until more tech. help and equipments arrived

I can only pray to God for the dignity of the families and dignity of the state that the bodies or remains are retrieved. This will be a prolonged mission, it wont be days. It wont be a few weeks either.

it was a MASSIVE avalanche, as has already been established.....it was a tsunami in the mountains, 14-15,000 ft AGL

That is precisely why I wondered at what point in time does the recovery mission stop being a recovery mission and the danger of desecrating those lost becomes a real concern?

it's indeed a huge concern....that would be insult to injury - for the families and for the counterparts that are working without sleep in freezing treacherous conditions to recover their comrades

HUGE insult, actually....so i'm sure they are taking care. This was actually one of the concerns about using heavy lift and earth mover equipment. But then again, we're talking about millions of cubic meters worth of snow/ice/rocks over a WIDE span of area.

using hands and shovels would not get us very far....caught between a rock and a hard/cold place!

Exactly why I also floated the idea of converting the whole area into a memorial and stabilizing the area around by appropriately engineered structures for stability and precipitation management.

Glaciers being mobile and not static will eventually set free the buried soldiers.
If it was a sunken ship, which had to remain at the bottom of the ocean,or a drowned aeroplane, sat at the bottom of the ocean,Under such circumstances these can be declared "war Graves" or Graves and left as such.
Same cannot be said for a Glacier...Specially when it happened at the Bottom of the Glacier...which retreats up the mountain, and will expose the buried.
They have to be recovered anyway.

I think it will depend on how long before the first recoveries are made. If the main area is located within a few day (or weeks at the most) then I would agree with you. However, if no recoveries have been made for a few months before the onset of winter, then it will be a very hard decision.

it doesnt stop until every last man alive or martyred (at this point, likely all martyred) is accounted for

The trouble with this type of operations is that there is no "User manual" ,and no set procedures.
People have to learn as they do it.
2010 Chilean mine incident? Although a rescue operation all along, took then 69 days.
We are in the 12th day of siachen disaster,so still there may be a long way to go.
