Featured DRDO has successfully flight-tested Supersonic Missile assisted release of Torpedo (SMART)

Detecting a submarine at that distance will be challenge, unless its a network centric system with a drone deploying a sonobuoy and the nearest warship deploying this 'torpedo'.
Or if its guided by underwater sonar network being employed by india japan and the US in IOR.

Ocean is too big a place to be monitored by limited pre positioned sonar sensor network. Couple of years back, DARPA was looking at detecting submarines with the Bernoulli hump using drones and satellites.

IF succeed it will be a direct counter to SLCM capability of Pakistan, we should keep in mind in combinations of P-8i theoretically this appear effective solution ...

Further we must keep in mind IN has DATA sharing agreements with US and some other Navies ...

SMART system is possibly an Indian carrier-killer using an approach very different from what the Chinese have done with the DF-21D

In a bastion model, surface ships would shoot this missile down before its able to drop its torpedo. This may nessecitate the acquisition of AAW ships with longer range air defense missiles.

So you will need a surface ships guarding the submarines from these missile assisted torpedoes, giving away ,their approximate position and pretty much defeating the submarines primary purpose of being lone, silent, hunter killers.

The basic concept of this SMART is similar to US VL-ASROC which have almost similar range of 22 Km from ship .... and Indian SMART system is shown having 24 KM range from ship which is practical and not an exaggerated threat as such here keep in mind Sonar suit [hull mounted + towed array] of most ships can detect ships +100 KM range so in open sea its 'claimed 650 KM range' is of no use and not a threat as many submarine launched anti-ship missile have more range then the range of sonar suits of defending ships ....

The real utility of this claimed 650 KM range (IF TRUE) lies in coastal defence if launched from coast with the help of sensor fused net-centric coastal defence
.... in this case the attacking submarine could use longer range SLCM/SLBM and could maintain safe distance.

One thing which is ONLY MY ASSUMPTION so don't ask for any source or proof .... this new SMART system might be using some of the technologies acquired for K-15/Shuray missiles systems.

@Rashid Mahmood .... would like to read your comment about this new development in IOR

Distances of 650Km listed can be achieved. You have our P8I which is a submarine hunter and can relay positions of multiple submarines if it chooses to not engage itself and neutralize it. In the future, you will posses drones capable of search, track, and relay too.
