Pakistan and Italy in talks over defence industry collaboration
Jon Grevatt Jane's Asia-Pacific Industry Reporter - Bangkok
Pakistan and Italy are exploring areas of potential defence industry collaboration following meetings in Islamabad between Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini.
A statement by the Pakistani government on 11 November said that co-operation in the production of unspecified defence items was being considered alongside collaboration programmes in oil and gas exploration and construction.
The statement added: "[Frattini] gave assurances on the transfer of technology to Pakistan in the fields of renewable energy, agriculture and defence production through joint ventures and the capacity building of young professionals through their training in Italy."
It is possible that defence collaboration is linked to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In 2007 the Pakistan Air Force acquired the Falco UAV designed by Finmeccanica company Selex Galileo. The system has been part-produced by Pakistan Ordnance Factories at facilities in Kamra since August 2009.
The two countries were expected to follow up collaboration on the Falco UAV - which is used by the Pakistani armed forces for aerial reconnaissance and information gathering - with a programme to develop and produce an armed UAV.
Selex Galilleo has also supplied the Grifo aircraft radar system to Pakistan. Orders were placed in 1995, with deliveries taking place between 2000 and 2004.
Another area of interest to both countries is collaboration on a aircraft radar system for the Pakistan Air Force's newest fighter the JF-17 Thunder. Italy has shown keen interest to step in the void created by the refusal / delay by the french to supply a avionics and radar package.
