The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday accepted for hearing a petition to stop the Aurat March 2020, scheduled to be held on March 8, and summoned Additional Director Cybercrime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency and Deputy Inspector General Operations on February 27.

The petition, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, filed by Judicial Activism Council Chairman Azhar Siddique said that "there are various anti-state parties present who are funding this Aurat March with the sole purpose of spreading anarchy amongst the masses".

The petition also termed the march "against the very norms of Islam" and that its hidden agenda is to spread "anarchy, vulgarity and hatred".

"During last year's Aurat March, women were holding placards that had objectionable messages," said Siddique.

The petition mentions that Siddique had previously submitted an application to the Capital City Police Office (CCPO) Lahore to register a first information report against the "women holding objectionable placards at the march" but police did not take any action.

He also submitted another application to enforce the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 and Citizen Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules, 2020 to "stop the promotion of anti-state activities such as Aurat March on social media" and another application for the promulgation of the Punjab Red Zone (Establishment and Security) Act, 2018 throughout not only Lahore but also the rest of Punjab but no action has been taken yet.

The petition requested the court to effectively promulgate the Acts mentioned in the petition to "silence the advertisement of Aurat March on social media and to regulate protests such as the Aurat March".

The LHC directed the federal government lawyer to ask for instructions from the Ministry of Interior and inform the court.

On March 8 of last year, women across Pakistan came together to participate in the Aurat March 2019.

However, the backlash against the march and its organisers was swift. The backlash began with a trickle of comments on Twitter and Facebook, then escalated as people began faking and doctoring images of posters to circulate them on social media and stir up further controversy.

We don't need Aurat March.

Everyone knows Pakistan is the safest place for women, where every week we get to hear about a rape, and there is absolutely no bias at all against women; they can do all jobs, have equal wages, there are no norms which exert pressure on them to avoid careers, be the only one compromising; there's also no domestic violence, and ofcourse it is very heavily looked down upon, obviously.

I know because a white privileged, tourist who has lots of followers, having high status, said it is a safe place.

Women do need awareness of their rights in our society. This so called AURAT march is nothing more than bunch of sexually frustrated aunties with pics of how vigiana looks like or how they can sit with legs open. There are real issues that need to be addressed but not this wahyati march which degrades women in our society as some sexual tools.

LHC moved for permanent ban on Aurat March
WAJIH AHMAD SHEIKH
LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh on Monday issued notices to the federal and provincial governments on an application seeking a permanent ban on upcoming ‘Aurat March’ for being an “anti-state” and “un-Islamic” activity.

“Prima facie the Aurat March is misdirection and a failed attempt to raise grave issues commonly faced by women,” claimed applicant Advocate Azhar Siddique, who agitated the matter by filing a civil miscellaneous application in his already pending petition for enforcement of new social media regulations.

The lawyer stated that hundreds of women would once again march with placards displaying various messages that allegedly manifest anarchy and vulgarity. He argued that by openly displaying their aspirations, during the last year’s march, some women, men and gay persons dared take a step ahead in creating an environment that was traditionally, culturally and morally less binding upon them.

Advocate Siddique contended that the basic purpose of women’s day was to recognise and appreciate women for their achievements as well as solidarity with women struggling all over the world against cruelty, discrimination, ignorance and domestic violence.

Chief Justice Sheikh issues notices to federal, provincial governments

However, he said, the Aurat March, this year scheduled for March 8, attracted scores of women from various walks of life also garnered criticism on social media due to the fact that there were always offensive messages on placards.

He alleged that the women march enjoyed funding from various anti-state parties which wanted to create anarchy among the masses. Apparently, he claimed, the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement and its allies had a hidden agenda and were the major stakeholders in this march.

Besides enforcement of the social media regulations recently introduced by the government, the lawyer also requested the court to strictly regulate and silence forever ‘anti-state’ activities such as the Aurat March.

Taking up another application by a digital rights activist against the new social media regulations, Chief Justice Sheikh also issued notices to the federal government and other authorities. He sought the appearance of Federal Investigation Agency’s director Lahore and DIG (operations) at the next hearing on Feb 27 to learn about the steps being taken for implementation of the impugned regulations.

Advocate Usama Khawar Ghumman appeared on behalf of activist Ms Jannat Ali, who filed the application in the main petition moved by Advocate Siddique in favour of the new regulations.

The counsel argued that the impugned rules were unconstitutional as they indiscriminately violated constitutionally secured freedom of speech and expression, right to access to information and right to privacy of all citizens.

To a court’s query about the locus standi of the applicant to agitate the matter, Mr Ghumman said the applicant being a digital rights activist and active user of social media was deeply concerned about the chilling effect that such overregulation was having on her online speech and fundamental freedoms.

Advocate Siddique also opposed the competency of the application by the activist and urged the court to dismiss the same.

Mr Ghumman, however, argued that the applicant was concerned about broad discretionary powers given to the national coordinator (a person appointed by the federal government), leaving great room for abuse. He argued that parliament had not given such broad powers to the government itself so it could not delegate such draconian powers to the national coordinator.

The counsel said the Citizens Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules, 2020 prima facie appeared to be illegal and in conflict with the fundamental rights of citizens enshrined in the Constitution.

Good.
I know our women suffer a lot in our culture and society in general.
But playing into the hands of ignorance driven feminism is not going to help anyone but only destroy what is left of the family system and religion.
If only people could lift themselves away from fake liberation stemming out of ignorance of religion, they could both build better lives for their own and for the society and country at large.

As long as such dumb idiots are Chief Justice ..... who takes notice of so called aurat march but not killings and cases pending for years . we cant move forward.

PS: i am also against this so called aurat march ... but everyone has choice to do whatever they want

Excellent move.

This 'Aurat March' has done nothing but promoted open sexual lewdness and destruction of the family. Without healthy family you cannot have a healthy society.

I wish Shoot at sight.

Excellent move.

This 'Aurat March' has done nothing but promoted open sexual lewdness and destruction of the family. Without healthy family you cannot have a healthy society.

Yes, a healthy family is one where there is domestic violence, a woman is expected to only compromise, and a career oriented woman is not allowed.

God blessed us with leaders well, well ahead of their time, and still we are only going back in times.

“No nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you. We are victims of evil customs. It is a crime against humanity that our women are shut up within the four walls of the houses as prisoners. There is no sanction anywhere for the deplorable condition in which our women have to live.”

"Women need to be aware of their rights."

Aurat March organized to end evil social norms which preesurize, take away woman's freedom.

"Wahiyat! Wahiyat!"

Do tell us what you consider to be rights. Will women be allowed to be and stop being used by society as sexual objects; that's where this whole "purity" thinking comes from after all.

No sir, every one does not get to have a choice to do "whatever they want".
We are here on Earth for a purpose to worship our Creator and live according to His rules.
If people don't like it, they are free to remove themselves from the label of being a Muslim and I'll happily accept however they want to live their life as long as it doesn't disturb mine.
My problem starts when they do it while referring to themselves as some kind of Muslims while having no clue on what it takes to be one.

Some think music is haram. Some think a woman should stay in doors. Some think a man should not wear pant and jeans. Some think clean shaving your beard is haram. Some think Nationalism is haram.

Where do we draw the line. If that's the criteria; that it disturbs you when they do a, b, and c, while calling themselves Muslims (nothing of Aurat March is against Islam unless you consider women empowerment against Islam) then every person will have a problem.

I mean, this march isn't calling for LBGT rights. This march isn't calling for Qadianis to be declared Muslims. What exactly offends you, huh?

Third World issues.

Human rights abuses - in third world.
Oppression of minorities - in third world.
Oppression of women - in third world.
Lack of education and no desire for it - in third world.

Protests for betterment of these issues - in first world.

Probably why they will keep on progressing to big heights while we will be here still stuck in same social issues on repeat.
