Pakistan approves Rs 35 million for Mohenjodaro uplift
Lahore: Pakistan has approved a grant of Rs 35 million as part of the first phase of the Master Plan for Rehabilitation and Cultural Tourism (MPRCT) at Mohenjodaro, a cradle of the Indus Valley civilization.
Officials said the federal government has already allotted a fund of Rs. 500,000 for the plan, and the 35 million would be part of the new package as part of the rehabilitation plan for the first phase.
Under the plan, studies would be conducted to determine the causes of deterioration at the site. Local and foreign archaeologists and experts in consultation with the International Council of Monuments and Sites would carry out the study at the heritage site to study the extent of the damage.
Only after determining the factors behind the deterioration, atmosphere conditions like salinity and the like, would experts evolve a strategy to erect 314 bending walls in different areas of Mohenjodaro.
Archaeologist Ali Haider said a "storm drainage plan" would also be included in the plan, and later an Indus Valley School of Art and Architect, being part of the MPRCT, would design a museum, crafts centre, laboratory and a bookshop near the site.
Officials said the Department of Archaeology has also started preparing a second phase of the MPRCT, and this would include erecting road diversions, and construction of a 5.5-foot wall around the site, reports The News.
The site would also be illuminated at night to enable visitors take a look around, in the dark.
