YouTube blocked in Saudi Arabia after king orders ban on websites carrying anti-Islam film



RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Saudi Arabia's state-owned press agency reports that King Abdullah has ordered the blocking of all websites with access to an anti-Islam film that has sparked protests across the Muslim world.

An Associated Press reporter in Saudi Arabia reported that the online video sharing site YouTube was inaccessible Tuesday evening.

This comes after the Saudi Press Agency reported the kingdom sent a request to Google Inc., YouTube's owner, to "veil" all links containing the video, which was produced in the United States and which ridicules the Prophet Muhammad.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Google has blocked access to the video in Libya and Egypt following violence there, and in Indonesia and India because it says the video broke laws in those countries.

Other Muslim countries should follow Pakistan and Saudi foot steps to pose a considerable collective pressure that would absolutely compel YouTube to delete the videos. I didn't watch the video BTW and I hope people don't watch it because it would just increase the number of viewers.

Regarding the OP, YouTube is the single biggest major source of Internt entertainment in KSA, entire publishing companies were created to cater to Youtubers. I hope if this really happens it will only be temporarily.

There is nothing called bad publicity. I watched that video as posts against this video made me curious what is it in the video which has caused such a negative response. More attention or step taken against this video happens, more people will watch it and it may make/enable other film makers to make such type of movies to gain instantaneous popularity especially those who are struggling.

This video will create problems for govts. of Islamic nations which have good ties with West. The common man will support any action to lodge his/her protest and it may increase the Radicals' effect in the society, getting public support.

This "to do-not to do" situation in Islamic nations seems the prime purpose of this video.
