Young man savagely beaten to death by mob in Park Slope attack

One of Brooklyn's most affluent neighborhoods was the scene of a savage homicide early Sunday when a mob of revenge-seekers clubbed a young man to death with crowbars and a tire iron, cops said.

The men that killed Alex Santiago, 22, in the bloodbath on Fifth Ave. in Park Slope then pounced on a 20-year-old, stabbing him repeatedly.

The stabbing victim, identified as Jonathan Burgos, was in stable condition last night at Lutheran Medical Center.

Local resident Joseph Rivera said he tried to end the slaughter before the group of thugs - estimated by witnesses at about 20 people - could finish off the second victim.

"All these guys were just pounding on this kid. I was screaming, 'Stop! Stop!' " Rivera, 43, told the Daily News. "Everyone was just standing around watching like there was nothing going on."

Rivera said he was beaten back with punches and pelted with glass bottles as the mob viciously sought payback for what police sources described as an earlier fight with Santiago and Burgos.

"I got on the phone to call the cops and one of the attackers threw a crowbar that smashed the window next to me," Rivera said. "I've lived here a long time and I've never seen anything like this."

By the time the mob fled about 12:10 a.m., the mortally wounded Santiago - whose wife, Stephanie, is due to give birth next month - was lying near the corner of 12th St., across the avenue from where Burgos was attacked.

Santiago, his head bludgeoned, was taken by ambulance to New York Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, cops said.

He had five arrests on his record, including busts for felony assault, grand larceny and menacing.

Police officials did not reveal a motive for the violence, saying only that it followed a previous dispute, which witnesses said was on Fifth Ave. near 10th St.

"There was a huge fistfight," Kaia Ross-Duggan, 24, a restaurant worker, said, describing the earlier clash. She said she saw "one of the same guys who got hurt . . . walking down the street with blood on his face and a baseball bat."

Witnesses said Santiago and Burgos were jumped by four men who pulled up in a car and were quickly joined by roughly a dozen others.

Santiago's cousin Jessica Vega, 28, said the victim called his wife on his cell phone after the first altercation, claiming he was attacked by people he did not know. "From what we hear, it's over looks - he was looking at them wrong," Vega said. "They told him, 'What you looking at?' and, next thing you know, they were fighting and then they came back with more guys."

Vega said Santiago was raised in Park Slope and recently was laid off from a maintenance job at Yeshiva University.

"It's wrong, it's childish, stupid," Vega said as Santiago's pregnant wife stood by, too distraught to speak. "I'll remember my cousin being happy all the time - always had a smile on his face," Vega said. "He would have been an excellent father."

Savagery. Outrageous behaviour. Justice must be served. What kind of inhumane bastards are these?

Now the hyper-nationalist denialists in Pakistan will have a heyday and do in-your-face posts in the wake of the battle of egos that has been taking place in newspaper op-ed pages on the sialkot lynching.

What a sad little world we live in. "looking at them wrong" gets some one brutally beaten to death?

....

While this is senseless and tragic, the comments under the article are just as disgusting.
Meh. A couple of points: 1. Mexicans living in an affluent area??? WHAAAAAT? I guess they can when they are here illegally and do not have to pay taxes. 2. Doesn't everyone know when you fight one bean, you fight the whole burrito? HURRRrrrr I do not feel sorry for the dead mexican. He got what he deserved. He should have been in prison to begin with. Either that or mowing my lawn.
"one of Brooklyn's most affluent neighborhoods" Does any of these 3 reporters know anything about Brooklyn? 5 Ave is Mexico North. It's full of taco stands and 99 cent shops. Do these criminals sound like they're educated and affluent? Do you think they're worried about getting up for work the next day??

Why do Spanish and Black people resort to violence to solve problems?

Seems like the animals don't miss a beat to come out and create mayhem.

Mexicans don't fight 1 on 1..they only know how in gangs..I grew up in west Texas and had my share w/ them..once in a parking lot this 1 Mex told me to leave there was a fight going to go down..I got out of my car and said I wasn't leaving..lets go....next thing I know he called over about 3 or 4 more and I had to jump in my car and vamoose and trying to hit them as I drove off....thats is their culture,a cowardly one albiet.
THE ANIMAL POPULATION IS GROWING.

To me it's looking like some kind of gang-fight. I might be wrong though.

I'm not comparing but merely stating what I expect to see from the denialist crowd who seek comparative morality and justify/condone/ignore our own problems and shameful atrocities by comparing them with others'.

.
Were the cops standing around watching people beat them up?
From all accounts this looks like a gang war.. All you have to do is look at the guy's rap sheet. How would even come close to Sialkot is beyond me.

Humanity all over the world has simply failed itself

:) Honestly i feel that there are two reasons for your such expectations .

1. You posted the news so that people should compare it with Sialkot and hence you will get the chance for beating the bush around calling us a denial crowd although if you go to that thread about that barbarism in Sialkot hardly any member have supported or even made any excuse.

2. You have already mentioned sialkot so that if anyone bash such incident in the US or West you will have a face-saving by saying oh yeh you guys are in denial by comparing it with NY incident.

The bottom line is you have some biases and you can not overcome it.

There is NO room for face savings over such incidents in any society. Sialkot murderers are more barbaric than what the barbaric militants do by beheading innocent people.

Not guilty on this charge but expected response.

I am an orientalist and imperialist now? Please stick on my face the self-loathing sticker that uber-nationalists like to use a lot.
