Modi Takes Steps to Allow Yale, Oxford to Open India Campuses

(Bloomberg) -- India has taken a step toward allowing leading foreign universities such as Yale, Oxford and Stanford to set up campuses and award degrees as part of an overhaul of the South Asian nation’s higher education.
Regulator the University Grants Commission on Thursday unveiled a draft legislation for public feedback that seeks to facilitate entry and operation of overseas institutions in the country for the first time. The local campus can decide on admission criteria for domestic and foreign students, fee structure and scholarship, according to the draft. The institutions will have the autonomy to recruit faculty and staff.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is pushing to overhaul the country’s heavily-regulated education sector to enable Indian students to obtain foreign qualifications at an affordable cost and make India an attractive global study destination. The move will also help overseas institutions to tap the nation’s young population.

Even as India’s universities and colleges have produced chief executive officers at companies from Microsoft Corp. to Alphabet Inc., many fare poorly in global rankings. The country needs to boost its education sector to become more competitive and close the growing gap between college curricula and market demand. It’s currently ranked 101 among 133 nations in the Global Talent Competitiveness Index of 2022 that measures a nation’s ability to grow, attract and retain talent.

Some universities have already set up partnerships with Indian institutions, allowing students to partially study in India and complete their degrees on the main campus abroad. The current move will encourage these overseas institutions to set up campuses without local partners.

The University Grants Commission’s final draft will be presented to the parliament for its approval before becoming law.

While in Islamic Republic of Pakistan, country’s most powerful organization is working day and night to eliminate a national and federal political party and to assasinate its leader.

This is the progress of 75 years, country is about to default and to go bankrupt.

Oxford, Stanford, Yale combined stand top three positions.
Princeton is 1st MIT, 2nd.

For all the blame Modi gets for taking India backwards, his administration had actually started most IITs and AIIMs. Now with this, he is taking a huge leap in providing quality education to all Indians.

people with a bit of IQ will rebel, while educated people will make other countries their home and make them better.

Jahil and illiterate people make better naukar and kammi kameen. so its a good balancing act. The establishment keeps ppp in power throughout sindh for that reason.

I feel so much disheartened that Pakistan had a great future.
But we must acknowledge that India has progressed beyond our wildest dreams, and I congratulate Indians, while we are falling faster and faster into deepest holes dug by military Inc.

In the 21st century when countries are sending probes beyond solar system this country is resisting to eradicate polio that it will make men impotent.

These foreign universities are recruiting grounds for the foreign agencies.

We don't need them.

They are selling their overpriced bachelor’s degree to the elites.
Lowering the exclusivity of these schools will hurt their image but many companies are seeing less value in these schools so these schools need to compete with foreign schools like the IIT schools to attract talent.

In a way it’s Scamming the Indians, like the Ivy League schools in the gulf countries because when someone will ask down the road where they went to school they will say “Insert Ivy League School” in India, and it won’t carry the same clout. But you can’t blame these schools for trying to make a buck.

For the Indian students though, it does increase the number of decent colleges in their country (not saying their don’t have decent schools, just an increase in absolute numbers) so it’s a plus, at an inflated price. But that was always part of the Ivy League experience.

Although its a great news but govt must ensure their functioning here should be strictly limited to academics and they don't bring their neoliberal leftist LGBTQ agenda here and poison young minds with that crap

I think Modi knows what he is doing, He controlled Twitter, google, you tube etc type giants, so I do not think he will allow these people to do whatever they want.

But still we will be saving tonnes of forex that generally would go CANZUK nations spend by our students. Also it may produce an ecosystem which would be radically different from the desi one and may permeate some of the good aspects in our own educational system.

Welcome to Jadavpur University.
Or the northern DU campuses,JNU, Millia :p:

It is freedom in ideas and liberal secularism that can take India to the next level, not the closed loop ideological thinking.
India is reaping from the policies of nehru and Manmohan Singh.
But it is your country so whatever you do there.
