Xiaomi Mi 5S news and rumors

Julian Chokkattu

September 19, 2016

Xiaomi debuted the Mi 5 and Mi 5 Pro earlier this year, and we liked the pair very much, but the company may think the Mi 5 needs a slight update to compete with the best smartphones that have been released since. There are rumors of a Mi 5S being announced very soon that may fit the bill, and although there isn’t a lot of information yet, here’s everything we think know so far about the Xiaomi Mi 5S.

Release date and price

Xiaomi will hold an event on September 27, and the invitation published online shows a large “S,” which certainly drops a big hint we’ll see the Mi 5S revealed on the day. The event will take place in Beijing, China, where the phone will likely go on sale soon afterwards. It’s unlikely the Xiaomi Mi 5S will ever come to the U.S. though, so don’t go looking for it in your local Best Buy.

The Mi 5 can still hold its own against many of the high-end smartphones on sale, so what will the S version bring to the table? The big change, which has been rumored by several sources, is the addition of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 821 processor, and a giant 6GB of RAM. Very few devices have the Snapdragon 821 inside, with Asus updated Zenfone 3 Deluxe being the first announced, and Google’s upcoming Pixel smartphones expected to be the first phones with the chip available in the U.S..

Early specs for the Mi 5S leaked via a Weibo user and were picked up by GizmoChina. As always, these rumors should be viewed with some skepticism, and showed the Mi 5S with a 5.15-inch display, a Snapdragon 821 processor, Adreno 530 GPU, and a 3,490mAh battery. Storage space capacity was listed as 256GB, while the rear camera may have 16 megapixels with optical image stabilization. It may also have a USB Type-C port with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0, Bluetooth 4.2, and NFC. It’s looking to be quite a powerhouse if these specs are true.

Rumors about a curved display with support for 3D Touch have also circulated for quite a few months, thanks to GizmoChina. The feature is mentioned again in the latest leak. GizmoChina said the Mi 5S should have come out in August and that didn’t happen, so don’t take this information as fact.

Additionally, Xiaomi often has a standard version of its phones alongside a premium model, so a cheaper Mi 5S with less than 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage may also be announced. We’ll keep you updated with all the Mi 5S news right here.

This problem is also troubling me, my Xiaomi 2S (using 4 years), has changed the 3 screens... Maybe we should change HUAWEI...It can be used as a bullet proof vest.

I guess so..That is the difference between cheap products and quality products. I end up paying almost double the prices for the phone due to frequent screen cracking that too with in one year of purchase.
I have got apple now (Though I am android fan) but i have to admit their way of managing apps is much better than android. Apart from cost and battery i believe apple's iphone have better response and processing.

That's the Indians style that they always badmouth products from China but bought it in large numbers like Xaomi products which they can't produce in their domestic factories.

You can see many assessments of the Xiaomi, huawei, one plus from indians in many EC sites.

The phenomenon is very interesting. Just take it easy.

You are wrong. Pls edit some of your words. And read the posts carefully.

You should read more Indians posts then you can get the patterns.

Don't off topic now. MI5s do have the outstanding hardware configuration!

The Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus already have over 3 million registrations
GSM Arena
28 September 2016

Yesterday, Xiaomi stirred up quite a bit of excitement with the announcement of the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus pair. The Chinese giant appears to have taken a cue or two from Apple in terms of marketing as well, as it has opted to start sales ASAP. Both phones are said to hit shelves tomorrow. But in the meantime, to keep the hype levels high, Xiaomi has shared its preliminary registration numbers.

These have surpassed the 3 million mark, which is quite impressive indeed as a rough gauge for the devices popularity. However, it is important to note that the registrations in question are not pre-orders, but rather simply people who have given their e-mail to show interest in the Mi 5s or its bigger sibling. The form has been live on Xiaomi's website for a few days now and had already ramped-up around 1.8 million entries prior to yesterday's launch.

And if you missed the scoop from yesterday, the pair of devices represent a notable hardware upgrade over Xiaomi's Mi5 flagship. Both share some cutting-edge specs, like a Snapdragon 821 SoC, 64GB or 128GB of fast UFS 2.0 internal storage and 3GB, 4GB or 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The smaller 5.15-inch one also comes with a 12MP, f/2.0, Sony IMX378 1/2.3-inch main camera and Qulcomm's new Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, hidden away underneath the front panel.

As for the bigger 5.7-inch Mi 5s Plus, it relies on a more conventional fingerprint reader on the back. However, it does bring its own twist in the shape of a dual 13MP, Sony IMX258 rear camera setup.

Chinese companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi can take advantages with the introduction of their new phones.

Xiaomi just released Mi 5s. Let's wait for the others.

Xiaomi's Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus laugh at your flagship's specs

The Mi 5s Plus is Xiaomi's first dual-camera flagship.

upload_2016-9-30_9-57-41.png

Xiaomi, the Chinese company that makes phones with specs that top Samsung and Apple flagships, and then sells them at half the price, is at it again.

The company just launched two new phones in China: The Mi 5s and the Mi 5s Plus. The phones are an obvious answer to the iPhone — both are very, very powerful devices, but the 5s Plus is bigger and has a dual camera.

SEE ALSO: Xiaomi Mi 5 is a flagship smartphone with a really low price

As you might imagine, the specs on these things are top notch. The Xiaomi Mi 5s has a 5.15-inch, Full HD screen, a 2.15GHz Snapdragon 821 chip, 3/4GB of RAM and 64/128GB of storage.

It also has a fingerprint scanner has a 12-megapixel rear camera, and a 4-megapixel selfie cam with an f/2.0 aperture and 2-micron pixels.

The price is RMB 1,999 or $300 for the 3GB/64GB variant, while the 4GB/128GB version costs RMB 2,299 or $345.

5s Plus currently the most powerful out there

As for the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus, it is, on paper, currently the most powerful smartphone out there. It has a 5.7-inch, Full HD screen, a 2.35GHz Snapdragon 821 chip, 4/6GB of RAM, 64/128GB of storage, and a fingerprint scanner.

It also has a Sony-made, dual, 13-megapixel camera on the back, the setup being similar to the dual-camera setup on the Huawei P9 — one camera takes color snaps and the other monochrome for increased sharpness. The selfie cam on the front is also a 4-megapixel one.

The price for the 4GB/64GB variant is RMB 2299 ($345), while the 6GB/128GB version costs RMB 2,599 ($390).

While the spec sheet for both devices reads great (especially considering the price), there's more technical wizardry going on there that's not immediately apparent.

For example, the fingerprint sensor on the Mi 5s is ultrasonic and placed under glass, which should theoretically mean it will not wear out with use. And the dual camera on the Mi 5s Plus sits flush with the phone's back, unlike the one on the iPhone 7 Plus. Interestingly, the sensor on the Mi 5s — Sony's IMX378 1/2.3" CMOS sensor with 1.55um pixels — is more advanced than the 13-megapixel sensors on the Mi 5s Plus.

Design-wise, the phones aren't far off their predecessor, the Mi 5. Both have an aluminum body and a curvy back; the Plus has a round fingerprint sensor nested below the dual rear camera, while the Mi 5s's back is clean save for the camera sensor and the antenna lines.

There's no jet black (or any sort of black) option, however — an odd omission from Xiaomi which takes pride in following in Apple's footsteps (and sometimes being a step ahead, as well).

The phones will be available in four colors: gold, rose gold, silver and white, and will go on sale starting Sept. 29. There's no word on international availability.
