DHAKA, October 15, 2016—World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim arrives in Dhaka tomorrow to see first hand the progress Bangladesh has made in transitioning successfully to a lower-middle income country, despite daunting development challenges.

During the two-day visit, Kim will join a public event to mark End Poverty Day to celebrate Bangladesh’s achievements in lifting more than 20 million people out of poverty in less than two decades with its strong economic performance, innovative work with the poor , job creation by the private sector, consistent investment in human development, and effective disaster management.

“Bangladesh has had remarkable success in cutting the number of people living in poverty by almost half and its innovations are well known – many countries have learned from them,” says Kim. “I am eager to hear how the World Bank Group can work with Bangladesh to promote private sector investment by strengthening governance and improving the investment climate. There is also much to do by increasing investment in infrastructure, human development, and climate change.”

During his visit, Kim will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, along with other senior government officials, for broad ranging discussions on the country’s development progress and explore opportunities to deepen the World Bank’s engagement. He will also meet with civil society representatives and private sector leaders. He will visit several World Bank-supported projects.

Going forward, the World Bank Group remains committed to continue working with Bangladesh to achieve its development goals. TheInternational Development Association (IDA), the World Bank Group’s fund for the poorest countries, has provided more than $24 billion in support to Bangladesh since 1972 to advance the country’s development priorities, making the country the largest recipient of IDA. Its private sector arm, IFC, has a committed portfolio of $1 billion and MIGA has $305 million in gross exposure in Bangladesh. The continued partnership of the World Bank Group will help Bangladesh build on its successes to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity.

Awamileague Netizens are claiming that Sheikh Hasina is the New Gamal Abdel Nasser. Like him, She is going to build Padma Bridge by her own fund and investment from friends after initial refusal of WB to fund it And America realizing their mistake, is now sending WB president to counter Chinese Influence. Thoughts?

Everyone knows that the WB is a neocon-controlled organization. You guys add two and two after that....

The WB wants to preserve the status quo of what equilibrium exists now, not the new reality.

What is the purpose of this visit? Celebrating Bangladesh's achievement of cutting down poverty? Looks rather unnecessary visit.

Hasina has been shrewd and also lucky.

WB is here to maintain relevance. China backed AIIB was set up to counter Western hedgemony and its working. BD has been one one of the or the largest beneficiary of AIIB.

US was BDs primary point of strategic alignment.... this is no longer the case. The moment US and India got close BD switched to China.

I welcome WB or any others to come and assist us in developing further. But BD current alignment won't change for the foreseeable future.

This is a point of great opportunity for BD. We must continue to engage all, welcome all and continue to progress. We must live our policy... friendship to all, malice towards none.

Hasina if she gets the padma bridge built will cement her position and rub some of the negatives of her report card.
