Women take a stand, stop Karva Chauth
It's nothing but a personification of a foolish woman who blindly does what custom dictates.

| 4-minute read | 29-10-2015

Rainy days always make me crave samosas with hot tea. So, I fried some of those frozen, small potatoes filled little zingers and I sprawled out on the couch reading and eating. I do enjoy my two most favourite hobbies.

I was revelling in the moment when the doorbell rang shrilly and insistently. I reluctantly went to answer it.

On the doorstep, were a few of the Indian women from my neighbourhood.

I was still holding my half-eaten samosa in my hand when they barged in and started talking at the same time.

Something about eating before sunrise, then later again after moonrise, music, fun, dressing up and a party.

It slowly dawned on me what they were talking about: the primitive yearly ritual of Karva Chauth. I think Punjabis do it best and Bollywood has immortalised it.

"I don't do that. I don't believe in it," I inform them. I ignore the gasps, the expressions on their faces and the sneaky glances at the samosa in my hand.

I feel the weight of their judgment. I feel their self-righteousness.

I don't budge. I never have been persuaded by any argument that has been presented to me throughout the 25 years of my marriage.

I believe that you need to be sane, balanced and functioning to take care of your family. Starving yourself to show your mother-in-law that you are a dutiful caring wife is ludicrous. There are many other ways of being a devoted wife.

It's a backward, regressive custom, steeped in superstition and showmanship. Who has the better sari? Better thalis? Better food? Better music for the celebration?

It's a meaningless traditional ritual that enslaves women and chains them to a myth of them being docile, meek, sacrificial tokens to pacify the angry God, who will grant longer lives to those husbands whose wives do not eat for a few hours.

This isn't what a portrait of a good wife. It's a personification of a foolish woman who blindly and unquestioning does what custom dictates.

How is this different from stringing up a few lemons on a thread with a few chillies? That stops bad luck in its tracks?

Ladies, drink that cup of tea or coffee and wake up. It's 2016. People have gone to Mars. And the moonwalk was years ago. These are planets. They have no special power to grant your beloveds longer lives.

This Karva Chauth is a tool to suppress you. It's old-fashioned nonsense like walkng three paces behind your husband. Like not going to the kitchen when you have your periods.

Indian men love weak women. It makes them feel powerful. They love saving damsels in distress and that light-headed feeling that you get while you are starving, makes them want to protect you and they feel positively heroic. Bollywood heroic. That's just silly.

And don't be naïve about the economic realities of Karva Chauth. It's a big marketing day for the food stuff, the saris and the big ticket items like gold jewellery.

No one cares about you, you're just the pawn in the high drama. All that jazz with the pujas, the thalis, the sisterhood and the stories of devout wives, you actually buy the stuff?

I am all about choices for all women and I am totally supportive of yours if you really believe that being hungry will add years to your darling's life.

But I ask that if you really want to want to fast for your cause, then do it honestly. Do it with positivity and happiness.

Don't whine and moan. It's just unattractive and annoying. Cut out the drama, don't lie on the bed like a beached whale and complain. Don't snap at people. Don't be frustrated. Because all that makes it an exercise in futility.

If you do it, mean it.

Understand this: Karva Chauth does not make you a better person. It does not make you morally superior. It was a tradition in the old days best captured in Amar Chitra Katha comics when husbands went to war and the wives stayed home and some haggard witch thought up a plan to make the beautiful young women suffer.

Today, we are fighting for equality and we are holding high positions in every field. We are working 70-hour-weeks and doing ground breaking work, we are travelling, we are in meetings and making presentations. It's unrealistic to starve. Are the men doing that for you?

Everyone is standing up for their rights. Everyone is speaking out against injustice and supporting causes. They are believing in issues. Just look at the incredulous movement happening in India with writers, journalists and scientists returning their awards to the government in protest.

Take a cue from them and return that thali to your mother-in-law, ladies. Now.

Nothing to do with girls but it's all to do with the slavish desi mentality of blindly worshipping/adopting the culture of the former colonial masters. People have totally lost their cultural values and blindly started applying western logic to desi situations ending up with disastrous results.

It's just the case of neo converts trying to show that they are better than the original.

I agree with you man...This is ridiculous...This is too much of men superiority...It is as if women are feeling privilaged to get an husband..But in reality now, every man is feeling previliaged to get a good girl to make his familly...So men should start doing something like this brata rather than women...We should abolish all these gender in equality things from our society...But again that should not just include this karwa chowt but the triple divorce thing among Muslims too...These are all bs laws that has been forced by religion to dominate the women....

Umm.. Yes.

More men in India fasting for their wives during Karva Chauth - Channel NewsAsia

FYI, its just like thanksgiving. It may not have much meaning- but our traditions and culture are part of who we are.

But again that should not just include this karwa chowt but the triple divorce thing among Muslims too...These are all bs laws that has been forced by religion to dominate the women....

no doubt that religion has no future among humanity and continues to be excuse/source for oppression of male and female, but i must make clear that "instant triple talaq" is really a corruption of islami law in certain cultures, especially india, as has been pointed out countless times on pdf. :)

a proper islami divorce must actually happen over a period of a few months and not instantly initiated by the husband as done in india via sms, skype etc... the couple first have to visit the local qazi ( a judge, not a priest ) and get counseled to try to make the marriage work... the couple give it some time ( i think one month ) and go back to the qazi... this procedure to attempt reconciliation happens thrice and over a few months ( three months i think ).
In the ṭalāq divorce, the husband pronounces the phrase "I divorce you" (in Arabic, talaq) to his wife. A man may divorce his wife three times, taking her back after the first two (reconciling). After the third talaq they can't get back together until she marries someone else.

right there this discredits all this hullahoo about "instant triple talaq" that you hear in india.

and the underlined refers to the lady being permitted to remarry the same man ( after they have been divorced ) only after she has married another man and a divorce happened there too.

and after divorce, islami law ensues that the wife is not left financially abandoned... the "mahr" is a financial amount or other item pledged by the groom to the bride during the wedding procedure... mahr then becomes the wife's property to be used as per her will, especially if she needs it after divorce.

and then there is the point of a islami wedding needing only five people - the qazi ( judge ), bride and groom, two witnesses... no parental consent is required for a islami wedding.

so you see, true islam was far far ahead in ensuring rights of ladies... i am not even speaking of other economic justices in true islam.

what you see in india is a corrupted version mostly, corrupted by mullahs... let me also make clear that in islam there is no priest system at all.

for some more details ( Iddah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ).

Yupp! On that jolly path of divorce and lesbianism

1. how is acting against superstition getting on the path to divorce and lesbianism??

2. why do you think divorce is wrong?? do you want wives to suffer life long instead of just getting divorced and remarrying or doing whatever they want with their life??

that is just a tv advertisement ( capitalism ) driven trend among young jobnik males trying to feel "traditional but modern indian".

but i point to the futility of it... what happens if these couples fast for each other?? do their life spans grow by a 100 more years for each year of karwa chauth done??

can you prove that no hindu husband in history ( or wife ) died by illness or injury within one year months after his spouse ( or her spouse ) fasted for the day and looked at the moon at night through a sieve??

it is blind superstition which is on the same scale as astrology, and must be eradicated.

FYI, its just like thanksgiving. It may not have much meaning- but our traditions and culture are part of who we are.

what will you justify next, dowry and "honor killing"??

Forget about small matters like karva chauth - these are just women renewing their vows and socialising together..While trying to impress their husbands..

@jamahir if you can open a thread about the growing medevialism that's creeping into muslims in metro cities of India..The dark burqas everywhere..The long beards and pajamas are kind of creeping me out..I wonder where these folks are headed.

Or make the husband do karva chauth as well. Just saying, a better idea.

but it is such a wasteful exercise... like the lady says in the op, there are better ways to be a spouse than to adhere to superstition.

here we have, a country where people die of hunger, and then comes karva chauth and brings all this wastage of resources and money and effort.

...and instead line up to become virgin guards for a Libyan dic*?

Or make the husband do karva chauth as well. Just saying, a better idea.
Men have their duties as well.

the burqas, the above-ankle pajamas and the without-moustache beards anger and sadden me too... this is a recent trend and i think you and i have spoken of this before... my muslim is someone like gaddafi and al-assad and not some fool mullah from darul-ul-uloom deoband.

as for me opening a thread on this, sure, i will try find a appropriate article.

and "medieval times" in context of muslim culture actually meant sophistication and contribution to technological and socialogical fields by muslims and those living in muslim-ruled lands and it contributed to the later european phases of "renaissance" and "industrial revolution" directly and indirectly... you should read about the "islamic golden age". :)

it was the post-muslim europe that went into the "dark age" during medieval times.

Call it a tradition if not superstition. There should be something interesting to do in a year.
To fast for a day in a year is OK. And if an independent women does it, I am fine. It does not alter lifestyle or life drastically.

But yes, all the women who do it because they have to, they should stop. Definitely not for saasuma or to demonstrate good-wife character.

Men have their duties as well.
Yes. but they are easier.
