Women excluded from performing in Jerusalem festival

The Diwan Project, a musical ensemble of seven musicians and a woman singer, was asked to cut a performance short Saturday during the Sounds of the Old City festival in Jerusalem.

"We started the show and already felt something strange," said Gil Ron Shama of the Diwan ensemble, adding that soon "a representative of the festival production walked over to the singer and asked her to get off the stage."

"I didn’t know what it was all about but would not allow it and we went on with the performance. We later realized that haredim were threatening that if the singer does not leave the stage, they will disrupt all other events in the festival."

The ensemble was scheduled to perform four times during the four-day festival, but following the first performance, singer Liat Tzion was asked not to return to the stage, and left the festival.

Launched last year the festival introduces various musical styles into the streets of Jerusalem's old city.

Among the ensembles was also Marsh Dondurma, consisting of 15 musicians, two of whom are women. A few days before the ensemble was scheduled to perform, festival representatives asked that the women not go on stage.

"Several days before the show, people with the production demanded that we perform without the women," said Dotan Yogev, adding that he was offered male musicians to replace the women.

"I was told that the issue was a problem since the event was taking place in the Old City's Jewish Quarter. I was stunned. I said that the request was absurd and that I will not back down. After two days of nonstop phone calls I was told that the performance was to go on as scheduled."

Once on stage, Yogev recounted the events preceding the ensemble's performance to the audience, but his microphone was turned off.

Jerusalem Councilwoman Rachel Azaria criticized the incidents saying "This is insufferable – that in the old city of Jerusalem, to which the entire Jewish people long, this immoral, un-Jewish and illegal act of excluding women will occur. The mayor of Jerusalem must ensure that no sign of exclusion appears in cultural events and fight haredi lobbyists who promote such exclusion."

The Jerusalem Municipality said that "Many women performed in the festival, singing in many places in the Old City. Those specific incidents were an error in judgment made by the festival's artistic manager, without the municipality's knowledge, and are not indicative of the festival as a whole."

Except they don't cut people's head off, plant bombs on buses/schools or try and export their brand of religion around the world by force.
In your media yes, but in our media they are behind all bomb pants and terrorist activities in region, you may like to search for anti Iran terrorist "abdulmalik riggi" confession videos about his supporters.

Ah yes, Iranian media - world renowned for being free, independent and honest.

Tell me, as a fairly intelligent people - how did you end up under the boot of Mullahs and not even having something as basic as a free press?

How, as a people, have you allowed yourselves to get to the point where self-appointed Mullahs tell you which music to listen to? advise you on your haircuts?

You see, I can go outside now into my town centre. Stand on a box and shout to passers-by about how terrible my government is.

This is what Israelis can do too.

If you try that, you'd be stuck in a hole in some Iranian prison for years having the soles of your feet beaten.

Could you let me know when you Iranians are going to get off your bums and become a free state? it's getting embarrassing watching one of the region's best cultures and people sink into a stagnant quagmire of religious dictatorship.

it's like some one ask a person how did you ended up listening to doctors, those mullahs are our religious experts , that's why we decided to listening to them, nobody forced us or could force us.
but it's interesting to see how proud of freedom you are while your government is doing whatever he can to crash Bahrain protestors, if you like I can give you hundred of links about mass arresting in UK too.
talking about music effects on human health is beyond this topic, but just to know I'm proud of my religious for it's statements about music. while most people don't even know about disease that music can do, rise or decrease blood pressure immediately, Manic ,...

Ahaha. Yeah you need religious Mullah to tell you about Music health.

Tell you what, how about the Mullahs sort out the smog you have in Tehran? that will affect your health more than listening to the "western imperialist, zionist music" from the great satan Beyonce.

So you're happy that Mullah choose political leaders and then tell you which ones you can and can't vote for?

Happy about censorship in everyday life?

Happy that you can't sit in a cafe and talk politics without worrying about who's listening?

Happy that you're a closed country?

What are you actually achieving these days? growing pistachio nuts doesn't count.

You know, if I'm out and about in town and I spot a hot chick. I can walk up to her and ask her out for a drink (be it coffee or a cocktail)

I can watch uncensored TV.
I can wear what I want.

Ever sat on a beach sipping a gin & tonic, listening to the chatter of people, the waves, some music in the background. No religious police, no segregation?

Ahhhh freedom. Feels good man, feels good.

Hope you'll feel it one day.

in your view religion is some thing mullahs have created, in my view it's god plan.
in your view f~!ing around with girls in beach while your government is killing people in other countries is freedom, for me ability to be religious is freedom.
It's no wonder you think people in Iran are under heavy observation when your whole life is watched with surveillance cameras.
you may like to search a phrase like this on google"one camera for every 32 UK citizens".

Speaking of government killings.

Apart from the 'disappearances' in Iran and the 'accidental' deaths of activists, reporters etc in jail - how do you feel about the little conflict you have going on with the Sunnis in Iran?

What about the Baha'i whose life you like to make very difficult? you know they have their centre in Israel where they are free.

What about your Hezbollah. Word on the street is they like to do some killing?

Of course who can forget your suicide brigades against Iraq, using children.

And the public hangings where school children walk to school past some homos or adulterers hanging from cranes.

My Iranian friend here said he could never go back to Iran. Sadly, he says he doesn't even like the people much anymore. The oppressive 'atmosphere' affects people's character.

Sure we have a lot of cameras. And guess what? we can openly campaign to remove them. Some people are for them because they have saved lives and caught criminals. Some people are against them for civil liberties.

Just to remind you. You have an unelected person who is telling you what you can and can't do in your own country and your own private life, all because he claims to be a Koranic expert.

If you challenge him, you go to jail.

And like sheep, you just follow......just follow.

I think you're second only to North Korea in widespread brainwashing.

another proof of brainwashing. who's unelected?
since our revolution in 1979 every thing in Iran has been chosen using elections. first, type of system which people chose Islamic republic, then our main law, our president, parliament,.... till now about 35 elections.
our supreme leader is chosen by a Parliament called "khobregan" and it's members are chosen by direct vote of peoples.
by the way did you choose your queen? what about your prime minister? what about your system?
wanna go on?
