Horrific details have emerged about the gang-rape and murder of another young woman in India. The latest attack comes just a week after the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of four men convicted of the notorious 2012 brutal Delhi gang-rape.
The twenty-year-old woman was gang-raped and murdered in the city of Rohtak in the northern Indian state of Haryana allegedly by her “jilted lover” and his friends, citing police.

An autopsy of the victim showed that the woman’s skull had been shattered and sharp objects may have been inserted into her private parts


According to police investigation, the girl was abducted when she was on her way to work on May 9. She lived with her parents in neighbouring Sonepat district of Haryana.


“The findings suggest that it was a brutal rape and murder,” said Dr SK Dhatterwal, head of the forensic medicine department at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak, where the post-mortem was conducted.

It’s believed the woman’s face was also smashed with a brick before the suspects drove a car over her body to make her unidentifiable.

The victim’s body was discovered by a passerby Thursday, Stray dogs had bitten off part of her face and body, police said.


The woman was reportedly kidnapped from Sonipat, some 40 kilometers away from Rohtak on May 9. Her parents reported the abduction to police.

The family says that the chief suspect was a neighbour who had been harassing their daughter for the past year and recently put pressure on her to marry him which she refused.


They claim that Haryana police ignored a complaint lodged against the man about three months ago. However, police said they have not found any written complaint of the kind in their records. Police also say the family claimed they had reached a “compromise” with the harasser.

Two of the accused including the prime suspect have been arrested.

The gruesome assault and murder has been compared with the gang-rape of a girl on a bus in Delhi in 2012 which attracted global attention to India’s rape culture.

The victim who became widely known as Nirbhaya, meaning "fearless” received justice last week when India’s supreme court upheld the decision to hang the four men convicted of her rape and murder.

"The brutal, barbaric, and demoniacal conduct of the convicts shook the conscience of humanity and they don't deserve leniency ," the top court said.


This latest heinous crime has sent shockwaves through India. Congress president Sonia Gandhi said it highlights the need to revisit the issue of women’s safety.

Shocking details have emerged of the torture, gang rape and murder of a low-caste woman in northern India.

A post-mortem of the 23-year-old revealed that sharp objects were inserted into her vagina. The attackers smashed her skull with bricks and ran over her with a car, in an attempt to conceal her identity. The body was left in a field for stray dogs to feed on.

The victim's body was found by passersby on 11 May, two days after she went missing. The body was so badly mutilated that it could only be identified by her family by the clothes she wore at the time of her disappearance.

Findings from the post-mortem said that the victim's "oesophagus [food pipe] was missing and gnawing effects were seen over [the] chest. Her face, tongue, eyes and ears were totally distorted. Her face was not identifiable."

Police have arrested two men – Sumit, 24, and Vikas, 28, (only their first names were released) – in connection with the brutal sexual assault, while six others are also being questioned.

Family members of the victim, whose name has not been revealed, accuse six others of being involved in the gang-rape.

"When she said to them she would complain they hammered her skull in with bricks. The way that they brutalised her is horrific," said senior police official Ashwin Shenvi, adding that the medical examination suggests she was drugged before the violent sexual attack.

The victim's mother claims she filed a complaint with the local police against Sumit, the main suspect who wanted to marry the victim, three months before the attack, but it was ignored. Officials have promised to look into this claim.

Haryana police have formed a special investigation unit for the case, while the government has promised severe punishment for the perpetrators. "Culprits involved in such ghastly acts won't be spared. Will ensure speedy justice by fast track courts," Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said.

The incident has sent shockwaves across Haryana – the northern state which surrounds the Indian capital territory of Delhi on three sides.

The attack is a grim reminder of the Delhi gang-rape, in which a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern suffered a similar attack and later lost her life. The Supreme Court recently upheld the death penalty for the four convicts involved in the incident.

Woman battered to death with bricks after being gang-raped in Haryana


NEW DELHI An Indian woman was gang-raped and then brutally murdered by men who smashed her skull with bricks after she had threatened to inform authorities, police in Haryana, said on Monday.

Police have arrested two men for rape and murder in Sonipat town, and six more were being investigated after the victim's mother accused them of involvement, superintendent of police Ashwin Shenvi told Reuters.

The 23-year old woman, a labourer, was taken by the men - at least one of whom knew her - by car from near her home in Sonipat to the nearby city of Rohtak, where they raped her, Shenvi said.

"When she said to them she would complain, they hammered her skull in with bricks," he said. "The way that they brutalised her is horrific." The body was found in an open field on Thursday.

The mother of the victim had previously registered a complaint against one of the accused for pressuring her daughter into marrying him, but the disagreement was settled between the two parties, Shenvi said.

Sonipat is 44 kilometres (27 miles) north of New Delhi.

Sexual violence against women is a highly-charged issue in India, where the horrific, fatal gang-rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi in 2012 sparked nationwide protests about entrenched violence against women and the failure of authorities to protect them.
