(CNN)The Trump administration is imposing new sanctions on Iran following attacks on US and allied troops in Iraq earlier this week, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced Friday.

"The President is issuing an executive order authorizing the imposition of additional sanctions against any individual owning, operating, trading with, or assisting sectors of the Iranian economy including construction, manufacturing, textiles, and mining," Mnuchin told reporters at the White House.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday previewed the new sanctions -- an economic step that came amid a broader military de-escalation following the January 3 targeted killing by the US of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.

The US has been working to further isolate Iran in the hopes that it will return to the bargaining table to renegotiate a 2015 international agreement aimed at limiting its nuclear program, a key piece of President Barack Obama's legacy. Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018 and instead has since looked to impose increasing economic pressure with sanctions on Iranian oil -- leaving Trump with relatively little left to penalize now.

Late last year, the administration targeted Iran's largest shipping company and a major airline for their roles in transporting material for the country's ballistic missile and nuclear programs.

That followed sanctions imposed in September by the US on a sprawling shipping network that Iran uses to sell oil along with a $15 million reward to anyone with information that would disrupt the scheme.

The shipping network, led by Rostam Ghasemi, Iran's foreign minister of petroleum, has been known to send money to Hezbollah and to the Syrian government run by President Bashar al-Assad. The Treasury Department at the time also placed sanctions on 26 individuals and entities tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Quds Force, which the US claims had shipped roughly $500 million worth of Iranian oil.

The US also announced a round of sanctions against Iran's national bank later in September following an attack on Saudi oil fields.

In late June, new sanctions were imposed on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, and his office to block access to the international finance system. A few weeks later, the administration also added Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's foreign minister and its top negotiator on the nuclear deal, to the sanctions list.

Mnuchin noted that the sanctions on metals and other industries would be both primary and secondary sanctions and that the executive order allows the US to designate other sectors in the future.

Additionally, the US is announcing 17 specific sanctions against Iran's largest steel and iron manufacturers, three Seychelles-based entities, and a vessel involved in the transfer of products. The actions, the administration says, will "cut off billions of support to the Iranian regime."

The administration is also sanctioning eight senior Iranian officials who were involved in Tuesday's strike, Mnuchin said.

The moves, Mnuchin said, are "part of our commitment to stop the Iranian regime's global terrorist activities," noting that the sanctions will be in effect "until Iran stops its terrorist activities and commit to never having a nuclear weapon."

It hasn't been since 1920s money is tied to metal. These days Iran can print as much money as there is trees in Iran. US sanction has no effect on Iran.

The Trump administration on Friday announced a new wave of sanctions on Iran following this week's missile strikes by the Islamic Republic on U.S. bases in Iraq.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the new sanctions will target eight senior Iranian officials involved in "destabilizing" activities in the Middle East as well as Tuesday's missile strike, which came in retaliation for the U.S. killing of a senior Iranian general in a drone strike.

Mnuchin said President Donald Trump will issue an executive order imposing sanctions on anyone involved in the Iranian textile, construction, manufacturing or mining sectors. They will also impose separate sanctions against the steel and iron sectors.

"As a result of these actions, we will cut off billions of dollars of support to the Iranian regime," the treasury secretary said.

The administration has already reinstated all of the U.S. sanctions that were eased under the 2015 nuclear deal, which has caused significant economic hardship in Iran and cut its oil exports to historic lows.

Iran this week launched the strikes in retaliation for the U.S. drone strike that killed Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the country's most powerful commander, in Baghdad last week. There were no reported casualties as a result of the missile strikes.

The new sanctions imposed on Iran are "symbolic," a sanctioned commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards said on Friday.

"Imposing sanctions is symbolic for America and for me because this measure will have no economic impact and will not compensate for [Iran's] missile barrage [on U.S. targets] and will not bring respect for Washington," tweeted Mohsen Rezaie.

"It is symbolic for me... And I am proud to be sanctioned by America."

In separate developments, Pompeo discussed the possibility of an expanded NATO presence in Iraq in a call with his Canadian counterpart, Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne, the U.S. State Department said on Friday.

"The secretary and foreign minister also spoke about the Iranian regime's continued aggressive and destabilizing actions in the region and steps to contain it, specifically, the opportunity for an expanded NATO force in Iraq and appropriate burden sharing," State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

The problem is that the two biggest buyers of oil, i.e. China & Europe don't give two turds about american "sanctions". Iran knows this.

Although harsh but a step in the right direction.

Pakistan must fence the border and do not allow any kind of smuggling.

Also, Pakistan must make sure to heavily man the border so that no terrorist from Iranian soil infiltrates Pakistan for nefarious activities.

The Trump administration on Friday announced additional sanctions on the Iranian regime, days after Tehran launched ballistic missiles at U.S. targets in Iraq -- as part of an ongoing effort to choke Iran’s economy and end their “destructive foreign policy.”

“The goal of our campaign is to deny the regime the resources to conduct its destructive foreign policy,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, announcing the sanctions alongside Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, told reporters in the White House. “We want Iran to simply behave like a normal nation and we believe the sanctions that we impose today further that strategic objective.”

Authorized by presidential executive order, the administration is imposing additional sanctions against any individual owning, operating in or trading with certain sectors of the Iranian economy including manufacturing, textiles and mining. Additionally, the U.S. is imposing 17 sanctions against Iran’s top steel and iron manufacturers, as well as three entities in the Seychelles and a transport vessel.

It is also imposing sanctions on eight senior leaders of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s office who were involved in the recent missile strike. Pompeo said those sanctions include the secretary of the Supreme National Council and the commander of the Basij Forces, which is known as the regime’s “brute” squad responsible for the deaths of approximately 1,500 anti-regime protesters.

"Today's sanctions are part of our commitment to stop the Iranian regime's global terrorist activities. The president has been very clear we will continue to apply economic sanctions until Iran stops its terrorist activities and commit that it will never have nuclear weapons,” Mnuchin said.

Trump had previewed the sanctions the morning after the launch of more than a dozen ballistic missiles against the Iraq bases earlier this week. Tehran said the attack was in retaliation for the U.S. strike that took out Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani last week. The U.S. has repeatedly said that that strike was an act of self-defense to prevent what it has described as an “imminent threat” against U.S. interests and troops.

Pompeo was grilled on the specifics of that threat Friday as reporters quizzed him on what he meant by “imminent.”

“We had specific information on an imminent threat and that threat stream included attacks on U.S. embassies. Period. Full stop,” he said. When later asked what he meant by imminent, he responded: “It was going to happen.”

The sanctions are the latest in a cavalcade of diplomatic and economic sanctions slapped on Tehran since the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), in 2018. The U.S. has since imposed sanctions on everything from finances to oil, as well as top officials, and in September sanctioned Iran’s national bank after an attack on Saudi oil facilities.

Pompeo said that the sanctions are working and contrasted its efforts with those of the Obama administration as it sought to normalize Iran relations.

“Sadly, the previous administration had opened up revenue streams for Iran, under our administration oil revenues are down by 80 percent and Iran cannot access roughly 90 percent of its foreign currency reserves,” he said.

He claimed that is now forcing Iran to make decisions as to which terrorist groups it now funds.

“Do you underwrite Hezbollah, do you pick Hamas? Do you underwrite the Shia militias in Iraq or do you allow your people to have the opportunity to live the lives they want and grow your economy?” he said. “Those are the difficult choices the regime is facing.”

A heavily armed fenced border would ensure that.

If only our PM was smart enough, its time to take the game to indians. India has been investing in iran and this fact need to be highlighted. Pakistan should lobby and atleast bring the ugly indians face infront of everyone. This terrorist country that has been sanctioned is India's biggest business partner and it has been india behind all its funding. This makes india a terrorism funding country.

Thank you. I hope Pakistan receives its aid on time...
