Ahmedabad: At a function to inaugurate a museum dedicated to life of India's first Home Minister and freedom fighter Sardar Vallab Bhai Patel, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi underlined the need for unity in the country and denounced the culture of violence. At the same time while welcoming Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was present on the dias with him, Modi said that if Patel had become the first PM of India then the face of the country would have been something else.

"I wish Patel had become the first PM of India. Patel was a visionary. In 1919 when he was a councillor in Gujarat he has made sure that women's reservation bill was passed."

Nehru screwed up real bad!! His legacy is the unending conflict with Pakistan and China thanks to his hare brained policies. He got China's goat in the early sixties that led to the border war and before that volunteered to get Kashmir on the UN table for a plebiscite, against all advice. Sardar Patel should have been made PM instead of this lover boy.

Gandhi was selfless. He gave up being a lawyer-modernity to live like some hermit. He spent god knows how many times in prison and he wouldn't mind being executed/martyred for the cause.

and he wont mind sacrificing people like Bhagat Singh for his ego...and he wont mind calling off protests which could have broken the british raj(talking about non cooperation movement)...he would rather play politics with Bose than be selfless.

Gandhi is anything but selfless and yeah i am not among those who think Gandhi won us the freedom..African countries got freedom without Gandhi and 2nd WW was much bigger reason than Gandhi for India's independence.

I wish he was a little bit selfish and had not acceded to Gandhi's request to not become PM. It would have benefited India immensely instead of Nehru bringing his convoluted vision of Socialism and enforcing upon the Indians and keeping them under poverty for another 50 years post-independence. Also the politics of pseudosecularism started by Gandhi and subsequently followed by Nehru would not have taken roots in the independent India.
