USSR's Peak GDP (1989) - 2.6 Trillion
USA's GDP in 1989 - 8 Trillion

Russia GDP Today - 2.0 Trillion (lol)
USA GDP Today - 16.8 Trillion
EU GDP Today - 15 Trillion

Russia defaulted on just 20% debt to GDP in 1991 and stands at 10.8% today. 10% of their GDP is only 20 billion. That is a SLIM MARGIN FOR ERROR. Russia's Olympics cost 3x that. Now this 2 Trillion economy wants to try and bully the 32 Trillion dollar economy? Bring it. The USA economy grew 670 Billion last quarter alone. Putin can try, but he is in a horrible position to try and bully people with his tiny economy. EU/USA is willing to take a hit. Thats what i don´t get. Is he deluded or why does he pull out jokes like this?

It's not that simple, you have to taken resources into account. Russia supplies a huge chunk of electricity to the EU, which is why the EU has been hesitant to declaring sanctions, and when they do, the sanctions have been watered down considerably. If Russia were to stop the transfer of gas to the EU, you'd see the EU fall back into recession and may even go into economic depression.

Of course this would also negatively affect Russia as well, but Putin isn't stupid, he has contingency plans already in place. One such plan is the massive gas supply deal with China. He's also gathering his allies together to show that he isn't alone, which can and will disrupt the EU and US's efforts to enforce their sanctions.

That gas deal isnt that great, $400 billion over 3 decades, hell a high speed rail line here is costing about a fifth of that (which the Chinese are also trying to invest in). No side is going to do anything particularly drastic anyway as we are all neighbours who have to much common interests. Russia is small fry these days and no one really cares that much, people look EAST (you know, GEOGRAPHICALLY speaking) towards China where deals between our nations are far more lucrative for both parties and dont have hints of political bitterness/one-upmanship in them.

One can say that the Chinese Leadership really haggled well in that Energy Pact with Russia. The Russian side had to accept, considering the consternation it had experienced with EU - US Sanctions.

yeah support china, thats how stupid you are. You support the force that is behind russia and other global economic shift that will dismantle the west but you are too dumb to figure it out. Russias behaviour is because of Chinas rise, it will be our backup plan. British trade with china is 70 billion, russia is 90 billion. Uk has nothing to offer to china, you run out of oil and have no manufacturing. Russia on the other hand has weapons and natural resources. The last time you sold anything to china was pig semen, i am pretty sure this was bribed by uk or china bought it to look good, thats how lousy british economy is because more you cant offer.

haha you feel uncomfortable? Why you need to do such thread else? You're also full of BS and misinformation, america grows annually 600 billion you smartas not in a quarter. And given that America had minus growth in the first quarter their gdp probably increased 70 billion or something so far.

Russia didnt defaulted on any debt, we defaulted in 1998 with over 100%, again you spread BS. So if soviet economy which was still powerful country back then had 2.6 billion dollar with 300 million people? What makes it russia then today that has 2 trillion and only 143 million?

not true its 4.5 now or something thanks to your money printing abe politics.

Its at $4.9- $5.0 Trillion. By end of the year it will be at $5.2 Trillion.

In other words, the difference of 100 billion matters not for us. It is double that of Russia's, double that of France's, and greater than even Germany's (by $1.4 Trillion). And our economy is growing now at a moderate rate of 1.4%.

8-)

Russia could crush the entire EU economy if they shut off the gas supplies. Russia has China as a large energy customer. Russia might want to think about selling those advanced weapons to Iran too. If that don't work, then station a couple hundred nuclear missiles in Cuba.

A bit of error in this thread.

List of IMF ranked countries by past and future GDP (nominal) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

USA GDP in 1989 was 5.6 trillion, Japan was 3.0 trillion, China 450 billion (Russia not listed b/c it was the USSR).

USSR economy was #2 for most of the cold war (I think Japan overtook USSR in 1986sh because Plaza Accord doubled yen's exchange rate overnight). It was #2 in PPP until economic collapse of 1991.

Many former Soviet States (Ukraine in particular) is doing far worse than it was in 1989.

Putin is stupid. You can see this in the way he pushs his country into bankruptcy. He cant deliver gas and oil to china yet, simply because he lacks the infrastructure. At the momemt he simply kills himself.

nope, china even pays alower price than the lowest amount russia takes from belarus. Putin basicly got *** fucked.

how much oil and gas can russia deliver to china right now? :) tell me. The exact number. I can tell you... 0... zero. the gas fields arent even drilled yet, that will cater for china.

China is paying 350$/Mcm. The way I see it ,Germany stands to lose its competitiveness in the US instigated sanctions.Russian domestic aircraft industry is praying that aeroflot starts penalizing western airlines for using siberian routes or bans them. That way ,Aeroflot will have to come to russian domestic aircraft. Second, the LNG tupolev project is back online. Which means a lot for brics as lng is cheaper, more energetic and thus more efficient compared to aviation fuel.

But provided world war 3 does not start. At this neither western politicans nor putin will stop.

Russia has the most nukes in the world followed by USA, then China.

You still can't say that Russia is insignificant nowadays, since China still has to cozy with Russia in order to build up a new world order.

Russia has the largest lands and vast resources, this is something that cannot be reflected by the mere GDP figure.
