Why Modi wants Goa CM Manohar Parrikar as his Defence Minister

Do you think he will push his own policy in the MoD or is he just another puppet? We need a propper DM that has defence and the forces as priority not economy and political agendas. Is he strong enough to oppose the PM if needed?

whoever may be defence minister , he will remain very much in shadow of PM Modi . such is the persona and style of Modi .

Look the way Modi has virtually usurped all the External affairs ministry agenda . Sushma swaraj seems to be there for only name sake and photo-ops .External affairs ministry is being run virtually from PMO. She seems to be completely sidelined .

There is no way that Modi will let Defence Minister push independent policy .

He's a cunning fellow, a good politician like Modi.

STILL better than days of UPA when every minister used to run his/her ministry like there fiefdoms..............

If there is 2G case arrest Raja, as it was his 'personal' TELECOM ministry.

If there is Coalgate arrest coal minister PM isn't answerable.

If foreign minister reads Portugal's speech, ask him as PM isn't answerable..............

WOW.........

No I am not criticizing Modi's act of ' usurping ' External affairs ministry .( just to clarify )

I am glad that government is speaking in one voice instead of 10 faced behemoth each busy feeding own mouth and each speaking different language and looking opposite .

I am just pointing the fact that modi is a " Do it yourself " kind of person .

and frankly speaking Diplomacy remains high point of his 6 month of governance .

However it is also the fact that how much of everything Modi will 'do' himself ? .

Modi can't micromanage whole and each one of subsidiary of GOI .He needs good people to do that . as PM he must have overall oversight . but he can't and shouldn't micromanage all ministries .

Defence ministry needs a dedicated minister who can stand his ground in CCS when the need be.

Being in the shadow of the PM in general is not bad, the problem is, if you are responsible for decisions your ministry makes, which are based on the PMs call. That's why a propper DM needs to show his vision for his ministry, which doesn't need to be that different from the PM, but primarily guided by the aim of security of the nation and the best for the forces. That however is not what we are seing in the last few months and if the PM at least would push into the defence field with actual improvements for the defence in mind, one could welcome his work, but that's not the case either. Crucial modernisations that the 3 chiefs specifically urged for are getting delayed because of the PMs agenda to create more benefits for the economy and putting the forces and modernisation on the backtrack. On the one had he is speeding up bureaucracy, which however is pointless when tenders get scrapped and re-issued which results in new delays. That's where a DM at least must remind the PM on the importance of defence over economy!

This could be the best news we have heard for the Defence Ministry. There could have been other candidates(Arun Shourie etc..) who too could have been competent but Parrikar beings in enormous political clout to the ministry, both with the close rapport that Modi shares with him as well as a huge amount of respect for his competence with Modi as well as with the political class generally. He would pretty much be the defacto No.2, more important that either Rajnath singh or Jailtley regardless of where they sit in the cabinet meetings. That is as good a news for the Defence Ministry as it can get.

But isnt there a risk side on this too.. I mean bringing the best CM's of BJP to central government will devalop a power vaccum in those states.. If the next CM will not do his/her job right, it will be a massive blow to BJP.

Relax. Lot of time in yrs was wasted with Congress. I like the direction Modi is going with. He is not going to place anyone is such positions. He wisely looked at all possibilities. Think about it, the perspective candidate is an IIT grad. That's a bold statement.

Most gov't's pick folks whom they owe favors to, but not Modi. The guy is putting in place qualified candidates who can handle the portfolios given.

Sychophantic support is no support at all. It does not serve India nor Indians. All democratic govt's have a short period when difficult policies can be actioned before the inevitable political drag begins to slow down the pace of change. The BJP had at least six months while in opposition to know it was likely to be the largest political party after the election and even if it did not, all opposition have a clear idea about policies and key personnel who would form the most important offices of state. That is why winners must hit the ground running. As for the divine wisdom of Modi, I reserve judgement.

LOL...so giving 60 years & asking no question was NEVER sycophancy, but someone pointing out a good point, suddenly became a sycophant!!

More IITians, IIMians (?) and doctors should join politics.
Ha Ha. Trust me dude. IIM Grads go to an IIM simply to have great salary and life. Most of us end up outside India, fuget bout investing our energies in Indian Political scenario. Mostly u will see become Upper House members after having great careers in their field.

Indeed !

One beautiful aspect of Collective decision making as against "monolithic monotony " is that it strengthens and validates the process of decision making .
Defence minister must be able to represent defence community in government optimally . He is mere yesman of PM then it can lead to very dangerous situation . it is therefore very important that an independent mind runs such crucial ministry . It is true that by meaning ' independent ' does not mean it has to be ' different ' from PM.

But PM /PMO will have the larger perspective and the individual / defence community perspective must be appropriately projected by person who is not tied or subservient to its overall leader .

There can be no doubt that PM , PMO , CCS will have final say . as you pointed out in current decision making needs of dfence community is not properly represented and projected because of lack of dedicated , independent leadership.

Current Defence minister is juggling these two megaministries virtually from hospital. He seems to have spend more time in hospital than North block in last 6 months.

In lighter vein he could have been handed over union health ministry also . He would have been more sympathetic to health needs of India given his personal perspective.

Yes India needs dedicated permanent Defence minister who can provide 24 * 7 attention to its needs .

I wonder if it is sheer lack of talent and caliber or lack of trust that is keeping Modi from filling the vacancy despite 6 months at Centre ?

Wasn't Parrikar a staunch critic of Modi ?
Who wasnt. Every non staunch hindu person was skeptical of Modi. But logicals always use pragmatism rather than jingoism. Even I was anti Modi for his extremist image. Modi over the period PROVED his innocence after dedicated resources by Congress to corner him. After 10 yrs, things were very clear. So many intellects became Modi supporter after 2012 due to obvious reasons. Be it, Madhu Kishwar, M.J Akbar, etc.

OHH!!

You mean BJP will make a Christian CM of Goa?
TRUE FACE OF MODI and BJP. So Communal. :undecided:
