Why is Pakistan swapping English for Urdu?

Also at least when in Pakistan, the President, PM, ministers and members of Local and National Assemblies should comply to the national dress code when appearing in media or receiving counterparts and dignitaries from outside Pakistan whether on official or private visit.

And while his can happen at the official level, private citizens will continue to emphasize learning English:

Passport formats and barcodes and biometric information on the chip are internationally standardized as per ICAO

As for holder's detail's you can have it in any language as long as the details are also in English or French. Some countries have passports in more than 2 languages some even having 5 languages

So I can't see why we cannot have it in Urdu and English.

Below is from wikipedia

---------------------------------------

In 1920, an international conference on passports and through tickets held by the League of Nations recommended that passports be issued in French, historically the language of diplomacy, and one other language.[44] Currently, the ICAO recommends that passports be issued in English and French, or in the national language of the issuing country and in either English or French. Many European countries use their national language, along with English and French.

Some unusual language combinations are:

  • Passports of European Union states bear all of the official languages of the EU. Two or three languages are printed at the relevant points, followed by reference numbers which point to the passport page where translations into the remaining languages appear. In addition to the official EU languages, British passports bear Welsh and Scots Gaelic.
  • The Barbadian passport and the United States passport are tri-lingual: English, French and Spanish. United States passports were traditionally English and French, but began being printed with a Spanish message and labels during the late 1990s, in recognition of Puerto Rico's Spanish-speaking status. Only the message and labels are in multiple languages, the cover and instructions pages are printed solely in English.
  • In Belgium, all three official languages (Dutch, French, German) appear on the cover, in addition to English on the main page. The order of the official languages depends on the official residence of the holder.
  • Passports of Bosnia and Herzegovina are in the three official languages (Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian), in addition to English.
  • Brazilian passports contain four languages: Portuguese, the official country language, Spanish, in accordance with neighboring nations, English and French.
  • Cypriot passports are in Greek, Turkish and English.
  • The first page of a Libyan passport is in Arabic only. The last page (first page from western viewpoint) has an English equivalent of the information on the Arabic first page (western last page). Similar arrangements are found in passports of some other Arab countries.
  • Iraqi passports are in Arabic, Kurdish and English.
  • Macau SAR passports are in three languages: Chinese, Portuguese and English.
  • New Zealand passports are in English and Māori.
  • Norwegian passports are in the two forms of the Norwegian language, Bokmål and Nynorsk, and in English.
  • Sri Lankan passports are in Sinhala, Tamil and English.
  • Swiss passports are in five languages: German, French, Italian, Romansh and English.

Swiss passport

The data page/information page is printed in the 4 Swiss official languages: German, French, Italian, Romansch. English is also used.[7] (except for the last cover page where certain Information for Swiss citizens is only in the 4 Swiss official languages. On page 2 there are 13 languages which of 12 are the official languages from the EU (German, French, Italian, Romansh, English, Danish, Greek, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish and Spanish).

On the back cover page there is the sentence also in all

This passport contains 40 pages.

I dont think anyone would have a problem with making urdu our official language but we need time to ease into it and just cant get into it right off the bat. The best way to this without decreasing our productivity should be to make both English and Urdu our official languages, so non of the citizens have any problem and after a few year we can change completely into Urdu. Changing this quickly will make alot of us unproductive and in turn effect the GDP.

And while his can happen at the official level, private citizens will continue to emphasize learning English:

Both the languages can go side by side together. But not on the account of marginalizing Urdu the national language. After all it was chosen as the national language for many good and valid reasons.

Actually imagine if a Pakistani learns his mother tongue (Punjabi, Pushto, Sindhi, Kashmiri, etc.) at home, Urdu and English at school, add to that a choice for proper Arabic (for religious purpose as stated by the constitution) + one additional international language of UN. You can easily get a multilingual citizen with 5 languages. This is not difficult to achieve. It has been proven that children starting to learn multiple languages at a young age learn far more better than learning one new language at a later stage.

Imagine the results after one generation where Pakistanis speaking at least 4 or 5 languages easily. It will open a whole new world of opportunities for the economy, for the growth of the nation, for the growth of the citizen, for cultural interaction with countries using the language one learns.

In public schools in UAE, they have English and Arabic with more focus on Arabic of course. But some years back they started a pilot project by introducing Chinese at some schools.

Private schools in UAE teach basic Arabic + English + French and some even add a choice of south Asian languages for students from South Asia.

Now see this:

LOLOLOLOLOL . Some people giving examples of law terminologies being translated to urdu. For god's sake get a life. These terms are already in Latin, they were never shifted to english in the first place ,who would do them in urdu.

Oh and wait why no one ever questions why these latin law terminologies have been used for last a 1000 years by now. Time to move ahead and find a replacement to them. Why no one questions backwardness and being-stuck-in-past thing here.

Yaar ok on a devastating note i have to say ,now that english is an intl lang of communication Pakistani gov must make moves to up its teaching standard, improve lang proficiency accross the country,'cause this is the need of hour , no shunning here. We are poorly performing here.

But enough with this slave mentality. Give urdu much needed status. The way things are going tere has to be steps taken to protect urdu from attrition.

Though unfortunate part here is that this specific move is made to sweep vote bank and earn supprt from anti nwaz sections of populace.

Bills are already printed in Urdu as well as English.

Passports also have both languages.

What's new?

As I have said before, baki dunia karay to it's "upholding national values", Pakistani karain to it becomes 'paindu' and embarrassing all thanks to the 'parhi likhi angrezi bolnay wali beaconhouse awaam'....people who think being liberal or secular means wearing jeans and speaking English with a 'dinga' accent.

Get a break folks...I hate Nawaz more than you do, but let's not criticize just for the fun of it.

Speaking Urdu means "Al-Bakistan" but speaking English doesn't make you "Inglistan"? Or teaching French in the more 'modren" schools doesn't make it whatever the French words is for Pakistan?

Why the double standards?

What does Urdu have to do with the Arabs.

Had it been Arabic in question, your point would have been valid.

But it's Urdu here, and that's Pakistan.
*gives a hi five

Omg i am such a through and through desi paindu and uber sappy for urdu, nothing could be more pleasing than a change that pulls this nation out of centuries' old slave mentaility whether it exists in the form of superirorty or inferirority complex. (Superiority = i can ispeak english so well ,hence, i am some big shot, boo!)

Omg! Love urduuuuuuuuu.

Because they spend billions on educating their youths giving them future. Because their economy isn't on the brink of bankruptcy. Because their country isn't infested with imported ideology destroying her from with in. Because they have a social safety net to help the poor and needy.

By adopting western culture how many progress have we made and how could we? where our mother language is Punabi/Sindhi/Pushto/Blochi/Saraiki, national language is Urdu, official language is English,

I don't understand the phenomena of Pakistan where a common kid is still learning his Urdu to speak they put bundle of books in English language on there heads to read and learn.

I bet no one of you even knows the proper meaning of your National Anthem because thanks to Hafeez Jullundhri it's in Persian Language.
