According to media reports India officially has asked General Atomics and US Government on the possible sale of jet-powered Avenger (formerly Predator C) drone to India.
Defence minister Manohar Parrikar during his visit to the United States later this year is likely to push for the possible sale of Predator Avenger drone to India even though India recently ordered Armed Heron-TP drones from Israel.
Predator Avenger drone is based on MQ-9 Reaper drone but has larger fuselage to accommodate larger payloads and more fuel, allowing for extended missions and can operate 1,800 miles from the nearest base.
Avenger also marks a shift from propeller-driven MQ-9 Reaper drone to jet-powered engines allowing it to perform high-speed, long-endurance surveillance or strike missions while flying up to 500 mph at a maximum of 50,000 feet for as long as 18 hours.
Avenger can carry up to 3,500 pounds internally, and in its 66-foot wingspan is also capable of carrying weapons as large as a 2,000-pound Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) making it an excellent platform for Strike missions from an unmanned platform said Defence Analyst Ranesh Rajan to idrw.org.
Predator Avenger drone offers unique advantages in terms of performance, cost, timescale, and adaptability that are unmatched by any other UAS in its class said, representatives of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc.
Switching from propeller-driven drones to jet powered ones will allow Indian military planners faster reach over targets especially in convert military operations but Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) will play spoilsports for India yet again and United States State department might again block any such move by United States government citing US export regulations warned Defence Analyst Ranesh Rajan .
