Why is India poorer than Africa?

LOL I never said any of that.

China is a developing country, whereas America is a developed country (and has been for around a century now).

China and India and Africa on the other hand are all "developing" economies with similar populations.

When making comparisons, you need to compare like with like. Not apples and oranges.

So comparing continent to country is like with like ?

so if populations of two areas meet its okay to compare  Why not compare all of EU and America to China as populations are equal Oh in that case China becomes developing

Shifting goal posts

^ To be honest neither Pakistani nor Indian should be trying to score points regarding poverty. Two developing countries where the per capita income is both pathetically low. I live in US and earn a six-figure salary and for Pakistanis and Indians debating over $1,300-$1,400 is quite embarrassing, poor calling the other poor.

Problem with Pakistan is that most stats are not available or not reliable so it is very hard to debate, I think even census that was supposed to be conducted has not been done, when was the last time it was conducted?

Why was China poor till early 2000s' ? The same applies to us, we opened our country a bit late due to bad economic system in place and we are hopefully in right track now and will show a magnitude of improvement in the next few years. We followed a socialistic development model which was out of touch with the trade oriented development model followed by the rest of the developing world till upto late 1980s'. What's up with these threads to belittle india and it's poverty every few days.

Shifting goal posts?

Comparing China, a continent sized landmass with a developed continent (Europe) with a similar population, shows just how far behind we are.

Europe - $17 trillion
China - $10 trillion

It shows how much further ahead a developed region is, compared to us. And it drives our dream to become a developed country one day.

India and Africa on the other hand are both in the same category along with China, that of being "developing" economies. And all three have similar populations.

Esolve you do raise many valid points and comparison. I think you are right in saying India is poorer than Africa, it has a massive population comparable to Africa, any many other factors comparable to Africa.

Please explain.Which are those 'other factors'?

So why do your country men always insist on comparing China's growth to India, when they are not in the same league. Don't take me wrong, I have lots of respect for China, but why do you keep on bashing India! We have problems we are working on!

Dude root cause is that what they did to become a big economy throught autocracy and ironfist ,we are doing those with open ,transparent and democratic set up.Our success will dissect their idealogy and their criticism that democracy is not good for developing economy will collapse.
Western nations developed first then became advanced democracy. But we still are developing and also have a successful vibrant democracy.
Our success shows this world that it is quite possible.

Pakistan's percentage of poor is far less than India's. Also according to UNDP Pakistan has higher per capita income than India. Anyone whose been to both Pakistan and India can tell you average Pakistani has more money than the average Indian. India has a bigger business class that drive up it's average per capita income but overall if you look at population distribution India's poverty rate is much higher, so what does that tell you?

UNDP's recent figures show

Pakistan's poverty rate is: 21%

India's poverty rate is: 37.2%

In 2009 UN Human Development Report stated 79% of Indians live on $2 a day.

Ya right. My neighbours official income in their ration card is just 1000/ and has BPL card. But his NRI account will dealaround 1 lakh in a month.
Hope TTA can.think the issues we are facing in data collection.

A comparison of poverty in India with neighborhood is always a topic of heated debate and of interest to many in this forum.

As per official and unofficial records India still has more people in the poor category in numbers than others.

So even though the statistics are showing healthy improvement , what is the successive governments over the years doing to reduce the burden on these people?

Lets check some stats and facts.

India has for decades initiated and successfully implemented subsidies in sectors like food security subsidies , social security subsidies, farm subsidies etc to ease the burden.

A quick look at the current year.

India has even completed the Aadhar card deliveries to 650 million people who will be getting LPG and subsidies after they have already connected this to their newly opened bank account.

India has one of the largest Public distribution system where the poor gets staple food grains, such as wheat, rice, sugar, and kerosene, through a network of public distribution shops (also known as ration shops) established in several states across the country.

Food Corporation of India, a Government-owned corporation, procures and maintains the PDS.

Distribution of food grains to poor people throughout the country is managed by state governments. As of date there are about 5 million Fair Price Shops (FPS) across India.

India has initiated Direct Benefit Transfer or DBT is an attempt to change the mechanism of transferring subsidies launched by Government of India on 1 January 2013. This program aims to transfer subsidies directly to the people through their bank accounts. It is hoped that crediting subsidies into bank accounts will reduce leakages, delays, etc.

India has installed The Central Plan Scheme Monitoring System (CPSMS) which is a Government of India public financial management reforms initiative which monitors programs in the social sector and tracks funds disbursed.

So in a more simpler way, India though has poor is getting benefits from government through various schemes that has made ease of living by getting the essential in a very networked system.

Now its the turn of my Pakistani brothers to point out the subsidies in food, farming sectors, energy, social sectors and even job sectors which has eased the life of the poor in their country. We are all ears... let's begin.

Yaar...dont you know their whole economy works on subsidy. Electricity is free for all. They never pay for it. So is the case with gas.

of course, we should compare us to the USA, and we lose a lot. we are ashamed of that
and India should also be ashamed when comparing itself with Africa

Those are ADB figures

Earning $2 a day, 60.19% population live below poverty line
Even on 2$ a day criteria Pakistan is better than India on poverty

68% of Indians live below the 2$ mark

you are right, India has slightly higher GDP per capita because of some super rich people

Africa is a continent, not a country. Try compare India to Ghana or Congo etc then come back.

no, no, Africa and India has nearly the same population, if you want to compare it with Ghana, why not South Africa or Tunisia or Equatorial Guinea
