Cows and Buffaloes give milk for seven-eight years of their 15-20 years of life. Farmers use this productive phase for the birth of calves and for milk sale. Maintaining animals is not cheap. My colleagues have calculated that if the animals are fed properly and looked after well, it costs about Rs. 70,000 per animal per year. This is why farmers need options to take care of the animals not producing milk. Or they will have no options but to leave the animal stray, to eat the plastic cities throw away and die.

NDTV . Cheerleaders of anti India brigade.
If killing cows hurt the sentiments of a particular community then why not Ban it. In my state, there is no ban on beef. So, cows or buffaloes are all slaughtered.
Now alas, there is no milk we import milk from other states. I don't like Cow meat either. It doesn't taste as good as buffalo, goat. If you guys know.

Maybe the author has an idiotic assumption that India is a vegetarian country. Painting everyone in the same brush?
I would say 80% of Indian are Non Vegetarians, and its just people dont eat beef (especially cow meat). Most of the beef served in Indian hotels are Buffalo meat, and the ones with Cow meat are very very costly.

Why do you think so?

Isn't regular cow beef much more popular around the globe than either buffalo or goat? It's extremely popular in both low cost dishes like hamburgers, to the most expensive dishes in the world (Kobe).

Although cow meat is delicious, the religious sensitivity is probably a huge psychological factor for many Hindus.
Its the same as say pork which is equally if not more popular globally would render a negative reaction from Muslims, no matter how well its prepared!
I mean I have to say, those Pork buns are life for me, but I understand how someone can be grossed out by it because its so set in their mind that pigs are dirty creatures.
To each his own I say.

Well, I don't know about other countries. It's just me. But I have no problem in eating it. I've been to Spain and I didn't like the meat products in there. Be it cow or buffalo/goat.
OP suggests that cow should be slaughtered after they can't be used for milk production. The main problem with such meat is that it doesn't taste really good. If the cow is younger the meat tastes way better.
India don't export cow meat either. Though being the largest exporter of beef.

Pork is the most popular meat in China, we consume something like 60% of the entire world's global pork production every year (despite only having 20% of the world's population).

---Actually after checking a bit, pork is in fact the most commonly consumed meat worldwide too----

Beef is a lot less common in China, I can't think of many Chinese beef dishes that I eat on a regular basis. The main time I eat it is with foreign dishes like Vietnamese Pho or anything from Western countries.

I was about to say, pork is like a staple of Chinese food and probably the most popular meat in most South American countries too.
But you get the point. What's considered "gross" for some is a delicacy for others!

I was recently in mexico and they had a preparation with red ants which acts as a spice. I swear I was a bit taken aback at first, but after tasting it, I actually found it delicious! It's like eating crispy red chilies.
Mexicans also had a store for chocolate covered insects like grasshoppers etc which are apparently very high in protein and quite the delicacy. Of course I would need to really prep myself before I dive into that decadence, but maybe someday.

Also, on a separate note, I recently read somewhere that Pigs aren't "dirty" as most people make them out to be. Its the conditions, that they're kept in that make them dirty. And pigs are some of the smartest creatures around. Apparently they have personalities and unlike other animals like dogs, they actually recognize themselves in mirrors!
Seems the Pigs need better PR! lol

i really hate both cow and buffalo meat they make my stomach hurt...

Meat and Milk apparently aren't supposed to be part of the human diet to the level we tend to indulge ourselves in.
We evolved from apes and if we look at their dietary habits, it mostly consists of fruits, nuts and vegetables with meat serving as an occasional "delicacy".
Not specifically speaking of your situation, but just adding my two bits.

to add to your information apes are omnivore almost all of them are omnivore species even if humans were only herbivores with centuries of evolution has modeled human into meat eaters for most of the times. also it has been found that the vegetable potato contains all the nutrition for a person to live so your point is fair enough

No, they should not be vegetarians. They should be vegan!

It depends. Most of the westerners find Indian food too spicy and Indians find western food too bland. Delicacy is a contextual thing. Do all Indians like beef, I guess no. Do all Indians dislike beef, again I guess no. I personally found it too much hard to enjoy. I found chicken more delicious.
