I’d assume China or local companies are also investing significantly into the EV infrastructure (charging stations) and there is a large number of potential customers (at the Tesla price point) in China compared to India.

Precisely. Before Tesla would be willing to enter the market there there has to be a large enough EV sedan/SUV market for them to be willing to enter. There is also the issue of manufacturing in India. Tesla was willing to sell Chinese made Teslas in India but India wanted local production. Not worth it for Tesla especially considering the upfront cost of build and operating a factory and training a workforce. It would be worse then the problems Tesla faced with its Fremont California plant with their local politicians.

It's worse, it is the idiotic attitude. Everybody wants to buy a car come what may. The cars look ugly, uncomfortable, can't be driven at any speed, pollute, gas is expensive, ridiculous waste of import dollars, and even waste very precious urban space to park.

It is just a vestige of colonial Era aping.

Real Indian lifestyle culture society are all different but nonsensical bollywood , corruption, and unabashed aping .....the Chinese aped their way to glory so now we must ape them in aping too
