BBC News - Why did India's Grand Old Party suffer a poll rout?

Why did India's Grand Old Party suffer a historic drubbing in the general elections?

After all, India enjoyed social stability and 8.5% growth for most of the decade the Congress government was in power. It rolled out a number of welfare schemes which many believed improved public facilities in the poorest regions of India.

To be sure, growth halved, inflation spiralled and a number of embarrassing corruption scandals hit the government in its second term. Even so, how does that explain the party's worst-ever tally of under 50 seats?

Make no mistake, the scourge of unrelenting inflation turned the poor and the middle class against Congress: for the last three-and-a-half years India has been suffering its highest rate of inflation for 20 years, one that has also been higher than the world average.

This, many say, was the immediate trigger for people's anger and disenchantment with the Congress.

Then there was what many call the party's failure to adapt to a changing India, which was moving, in the words of one commentator, from a "petitional to an aspirational culture".

Congress leaders would say in private that their welfare schemes for the poor, led by a massive rural employment guarantee scheme, would fetch them enough votes in the villages to win the elections.

'Failure to adapt'

But the party possibly failed to realise that it is easier to spend large amounts of money on welfare schemes when the economy is growing and inflation is low, as was the case in the first five years of the government. In the second term growth was crawling, inflation was high and there was a current account deficit.

Also, selling welfare schemes caught up with the law of diminishing returns in an India which is increasingly young, restless and aspirational.

Every time Rahul Gandhi was reminding the people on the campaign that enrolment had gone up in the jobs-for-work scheme, he was tacitly admitting that the economy was in the doldrums. More money spent on dole implies that your economy is not doing well. It is not something a nation can be very proud of.

Again, when a rash of corruption scandals erupted in the government's stormy second term, all the senior leaders - PM Manmohan Singh, party chief Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi - were missing in action: none of them came out and assured the country they would crack down on graft.

Mr Singh and Ms Gandhi hardly spoke to the public and the media, and Rahul Gandhi was seen as a leader who refused to take responsibility.

Politics is all about adapting to changing circumstances and navigating change: the Congress party was not nimble enough to do so.

"It was a deep intellectual failure of the Congress to understand and adapt to changed circumstances. It continued with its politics of low aspiration," Pratap Bhanu Mehta of Delhi's Centre for Policy Research told me.

Narendra Modi stepped into this "moral, political and governance vacuum", as Aam Aadmi leader and political scientist Yogendra Yadav describes it, and fashioned himself as a hands-on modernising ruler, promising jobs and development during his campaign.

"I don't think Indians were yearning for an authoritarian leader. There was a sense that in Manmohan Singh we had a leader who was not discharging the leadership role appropriate to his office. There was a yearning for leadership that was inherent to the office," says Mr Mehta.

The rest, as we know now, is history.

RSS cadre return to camps after poll battle - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: RSS has resumed its training camps after a long break when it diverted its cadre towards the goal of accomplishing regime change at the Centre.

In the Sangh's scheme of things, training activities are supposed to be a ceaseless affair which go on throughout the year, but this year the Nagpur-based leadership had decided to break from what is treated as sacrosanct so that lakhs of its cadre worked to bring about the change.

Sources said the Sangh leadership broke down lakhs of booths in 428 constituencies contested by BJP into "friendly", "favourable", "battleground" and "difficult" categories.

The booths where BJP has consistently scored over its rivals and those with chunks of voters sympathetic to the party were tagged" friendly" and "favourable", in that order. However, Sangh focused on "battleground" seats — those which could be wrested from rivals — and "difficult" ones which have traditionally been averse to supporting the BJP.

Details of voters in each booth, especially house numbers and phone numbers through which they could be contacted, were uploaded on a portal 'Bharat Vijay' which was secure and could be accessed only by designated functionaries and was also uploaded on tablets which were distributed among district-level office-bearers.

The focus was on ensuring a big turnout, especially of the youth.

Talking to TOI, RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav refused to confirm these details, saying he would not respond to speculation. However, he acknowledged and defended the involvement of RSS workers in the elections, saying it was only the second time after 1977 when Sangh cadres worked on such a scale to ensure that the government at the Centre changed.

However, Madhav did not agree that the massive deployment of RSS cadres contradicted Sangh's claim that it was an apolitical organization which never worked for BJP in elections. "BJP has contested each election, but RSS has not mobilized its cadre each time. We worked for a change in 1977 because the then Congress government had muzzled democracy. We campaigned against authoritarianism through the Emergency and as a result, as many as 10,000 RSS workers were arrested. We worked for the overthrow of the Congress government because that was the only way democracy could be restored," he said.

The Sangh functionary also said that in the just-held election, RSS decided to work for change of government because it concluded that it was an imperative even though it did not ask voters to vote for a particular party or individual candidates. "Our newsletter to the cadre emphasized the need for change, and for enhancing the turnout," Madhav said.

Identifying the four reasons which goaded RSS to overcome the organizational aloofness towards polls, he said worsening of security environment, both internal and external, were among the factors which helped the Sangh leadership make up its mind. "Government failed to tackle the Maoist challenge and the threat of homegrown jihadi terror. Worse, it sought to create a terror equivalence by raising the bogey of Hindu terror so that the threat of jihadi terror could be de-emphasized," Madhav said.

He said economic decline and the feeling of despair and unrest it spawned, corruption and the creation of religious and caste divides and their exploitation for political considerations were other reasons why the Sangh threw itself into the elections.

"These are the reasons why we launched our Jan Jagran Abhiyan," Madhav said.

Why?!!

1- The daddies of all scams.
2- The most brutal mass looting of India.
3- The worst slew of terrorist attacks not responded.
4- The worst downturning of an economy by any government, especially full of so called specialists.
5- Communalizing the whole country and its open anti-Hindu/Sikh/Buddhist stance.
6- Failure to handle inflation.
7- Reduced our foreign influence to ruins.
8- Pathetic policies lost us friends.
9- Destroyed military morale more than an invading enemy.
10- Used brutal tyrant-like methods to 'crush' protests by innocent citizens for unlawful reservations and against a rape.

What more reasons does one want?

Give the people what they want and they will get what they deserve.

You fear him because he doesn't take the nonsense of jihad against India. It is rightfully the case and if you call that extremism, then entire India is extremist.

Our choice, our PM.

You have nothing to worry if you have no wrong intentions against us.

four main reasons i figured out..
1. Soniaji
2. Rahulji
3. Priyankaji
4. Damadji

take these four out of congress and they will be back on track.

One more reason - Congress is, for, and of the Gandhi family. It's a family fiefdom. They thought India was too.

Oh know what are we going to do now that Modi is in power.:omghaha:

I for one connected with Mr. Modi is bcs he is a self made man.....a man born into a poor family who rose to be the PM designate and then the PM of India. He doesn't belong to the clan of arrogant pricks who thinks entitled to positions bcs of their birth and Surname. I may not have hated Rahul Gandhi this much if he had shown his mettle as an administrator in any Ministerial position in UPA 1 or 2 that he could have easily got as a member of the Gandhi clan.....but he rather not to , acting as if he is born just for the PM post. I for one is happy that elitist brown sahib culture that Congress reeks of is destroyed (at least for now).

Its truly the rise of Aam Aadmi.

If you weak government can't do then don't bash others, modi did 10% growth for 10+ years in his state,we choose people for their record .

And by the way jihadis usually fear modi

There is no Congress without Nehru dynasty. Her imperial Highness Rajmata Sonia Gandhi, princess Priyanka and prince Pappu are the lifeline to Congress.

You really think removing them will keep Congress united? It will destroy them.
