Why China will not overtake US

.
Overtaking on the cultural and language fronts will be more difficult than hitting financial numbers alone.
A real superpower also controls the language and cultural front as well as the economics and military. How many people in the world will be willing to look like and speak like an American comparing to a Chinese/Russian is a big question. Not the Brits but the Americans are leading the English language now.
Don't underestimate the power of culture.

. .
This virus alone probably set back China overtaking the US at least a couple years ... probably longer.

forget virus , chinses system will not let china get beyond a certain point of progress . they can be manufacturing hubs depending on tech from other countries .

.
The majority of people don't buy property in Shanghai because they can't thats the whole point, high property cost = high rent cost

How many Americans can buy a house or even a condo in San Francisco, New York or Los Angeles? Or even Seattle, Boston or Washington DC? You don't really know what you are talking about.

The reality is that China does not need to gain the per capita wealth of the US in order to surpass the US in GDP. It just needs to be 1/4th as rich. It's already about 70% of the way there. I think there is a good chance China will get there within ten years realistically speaking.

In terms of soft power, media influence, cultural influence, institutional power, China will lag the US for decades and perhaps never really catch up in our lifetime unless China dramatically sheds off its extremely insular view of the world and learns to communicate with others in a cultural framework and language that they understand. China's handicap is that it is entering a Western dominated world whereas the Western nations colonized the entire world so essentially built the global framework from scratch and in their image. China is a stranger that is entering a house that someone else has built so it has a massive cultural handicap and unlike smaller Asian countries such as South Korea, Singapore, etc. who are oriented to the West, China is extremely insular which makes it tone deaf when dealing with other cultures.

Your statement cuts both ways though. How many Chinese can buy a house or apartment in Shanghai or Beijing or Shenzhen??? In areas such as metropolitan Beijing, real estate prices are significantly higher than even of San Jose or Manhattan.

Exactly, that's my point. The average citizen of both countries can't even DREAM of owning property in their major cities. So the assertion that the average Chinese citizen can't own Shanghai property is rather meaningless in the context of comparing it to the US.

.
Consumption categories? China has 1.5 Billion people it has to consume more than US which has 330 Million. If you rank things by per capita terms China has no chance. You have to remember China is still a developing country with living standards comparable to Malaysia or Turkey not US or Europe .

China has not passed the US in anything . Your living standards are still 40-50 years behind . Check your HDI . Social Progress and Indicators .

Economy is measured by Nominal around the world . Even if you take PPP :

US 68-70K
China 18-20K

Anything per capita and China loses . The only chance it gets to be ahead of US is when counting numbers as a whole . If you have 1.5 Billion people you are going to be ahead in a few things. Come back at me When China has cities like NYC , Chicago , Boston , LA or Places like Silicon Valley . 350000 Chinese students are studying in the best universities of the world which happen to be in US . Your own people are not agreeing with you.

US labour productivity is near top of the world . Where does China rank ?

4 out of the top 10 cities with the Highest Salaries are in US.

Good read into why China cant innovate .

This just shows you’re out of your depth. International power relies on absolute power, not per capita. US itself is not the number 1 in per capita statistics. US is powerful because of its absolute power. China has already surpassed the US in most categories, and in the next 5 years China will surpass the US in every category.

China will surely surpass US in nominal GDP in 2030 as many financial institution have predicted it based on their growth history trend. In term of per capita income, of course US still win at that time, but we are talking about nation power geopolitically as total GDP is the main parameter to value it.

Despite that, if US still can nurture relationship with its allies in North East Asian (Japan, South Korea, Taiwan) and South East Asian region (Vietnam, Singapore, Australia, possibly Indonesia is joining as well although diplomatically it stays neutral) until 2040, China influence in Asia Pacific can still relatively be contained even at 2030-2040 period. US is also still having significant strong allies like Western European countries + Turkey (NATO) and also emerging power like India (new development since China become US rival) while alliance between China and Russia is not too strong since Russia is also seen as threat by China.

actually you don't know what you are talking about

the user I responded to said China has lower cost of living, which is not true in its busiest cities, which have some of the highest costs of living the world.

No, actually YOU don't know what you are talking about. The cost of living in most major US cities are far too high for the average middle class American family to afford.
