So, this idea just came into my mind as I wrote on another thread about languages....

Which language is the most important/influential in today's world internationally AFTER English?

Write away and give your reasons...

. .
Probably Arabic if you think about it from an economic perspective with Chinese not far behind.

Otherwise Spanish in terms of geographical diversity, amount of countries and people who speak it.

.
It was a hard contest between Arabic and Spanish. A very close contest.

I voted for Arabic...

Well from the available data: Spanish has some 400-500 million speakers..and Arabic has some 380-420 million speakers (UNESCO).

So in numbers game, both languages are in same ball park..

The advantages of Arabic over Spanish due to which I ranked it higher are these however:

1) Arabic is more international language than Spanish (Official in 27 countries compared to Spanish being official in 19 countries)

2) Arabic alphabets are the second most widely used alphabets in the whole world after Latin...Spanish doesn't even come close here. Languages like Persian, Urdu etc are written in Arabic alphabets..hence a major influence of Arabic is felt even beyond its realm. Spanish doesn't have this kind of influence.

Spanish is itself influenced by Latin alphabets...

Having an independent writing system, that exerts its influence far and wide, is an advantage of Arabic rather than a disadvantage in my opinion

3) Arabic is a de-facto language of Islam..and hence influencing billions of Muslims directly. Spanish doesn't have any such characteristic. History's one of the most influential text was written in Arabic and is read in Arabic by billions around the world..Spanish? Doesn't come close.

4) GCC Arab World are one of the most wealthy regions of the planet. Millions of people go there to earn a living..and they have to learn Arabic..specially the people who do blue collar and white collar jobs. Spanish has no such value...So more people learn Arabic through different cultures than Spanish.

5) Arabic is the language of global Jihad terrorist network...Western militaries, scholars, students are learning Arabic like crazy! They pay upto 10,000 to anyone willing to translate from Arabic to English. Again, it shows that *now-a-days* Arabic is a very handy language to know..specially due to the global politics of last decade or so...

Although, give it ten years, Chinese might surpass Arabic and Spanish both as China rises and rises...

hindi/urdu should be in the list.

Since both are spoken almost similar.

100% pakistan and atleast 60-80% indians can understand hindi/urdu
More than 50% afghan can understand urdu/hindi
1/3rd of Gulf countries people can understand hindi/urdu

and much more to mention

Spanish is spoken in Latin America mainly (other than Spain offcourse)...Arabic is spoken in Middle-East, North Africa, and parts of sub saharan Africa..

How is Spanish more geographic diverse than Arabic?

PS, vote!

Hmmmm... You're right. I was thinking about Spanish in Latin America, Spain and also the rest of the world as it remains quite strong there and is also teached in many schools in the western world hence my point.

Approximately 406 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it second only to Mandarin in terms of its number of native speakers worldwide.[1][2] It also has 60 million speakers as a second language,[2] and 20 million students as a foreign language.[4] Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and is used as an official language by the European Union and Mercosur.

Spanish is a part of the Ibero-Romance group of languages, which evolved from several dialects of common Latin in Iberia after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century. It was first documented in central-northern Iberia in the ninth century and gradually spread with the expansion of the Kingdom of Castile into central and southern Iberia.[5] From its beginnings, Spanish vocabulary was influenced by its contact with Basque and by other related Ibero-Romance languages and later absorbed many Arabic words during the Muslim presence in the Iberian Peninsula.[6] It also adopted many words from non Iberian languages, particularly the Romance languages Occitan, French, Italian and Sardinian and increasingly from English in modern times, as well as adding its own new words. Spanish was taken to the colonies of the Spanish Empire in the sixteenth century, most notably to the Americas as well as territories in Africa, Oceania and the Philippines.[7][dead link]

Spanish is the most popular second language learned by native speakers of American English.[8] From the last decades of the 20th century, the study of Spanish as a foreign language has grown significantly, in part because of the growing populations and economies of many Spanish-speaking countries, and the growing international tourism in these countries.[citation needed]
Spanish is the most widely understood language in the Western Hemisphere, with significant populations of native Spanish speakers ranging from the tip of Patagonia to as far north as New York City and Chicago. Since the early 21st century, it has arguably superseded French in becoming the second-most-studied language and the second language in international communication, after English
