Nehru was not visiting these tribesmen with any hostile intention so one wonders why they reacted like that?, so much so that the tribesmen forgot the core element of their life style i.e hospitality. These tribesmen (Wazirs, Mehsuds, Afridis etc) give hospitality even to criminals and murderers. So i think these tribesmen were paid to maltreat Nehru.

Tribal people were not driven by Indian mainstream politics at that time nor they were getting influenced by Hindu-Muslim tensions deep in India. As i have already mention, they are type of people who extends hospitality and asylum even to murderers, criminals and other sobs so maltreatment of Nehru was unwarranted and was against their norms and ethos.

Well he was scared, and his fear was spot on as he and his men faced the wrath of the victors (wolves in his words) afterwards , tables were turned on him. Read about the Babrra massacre.

The demand for including independent Pashtunistan option in the referendum , was their clutching to last straw but democratically there was nothing wrong with that demand. In the same spirit Jinnah and co made a demand for completely independent Pakistan, to be carved out from India, in 1946 when Cabinet mission failed.

He had demanded independent Pashtunistan from British Raj before creation of Pakistan, so he was not a "traitor" by any definition. Calling him a traitor of Pakistan is ultra nationalist bigotry. He was juts an unfortunate man like Subhas Chandra Bose.

Bacha Khan's family was originally from Jalalabad. His great grandfather Obaidullah Khan Muhammadzai was hanged by Saddozai ruler and the family migrated to Charsadda where Muhammadzais also live. Its perfectly normal and O.K to be buried in your ancestral place. Cursing him for it, is simply ultra nationalism , intolerance and bigotry.

Mehr Dil Kaka behaved terribly towards a guest , in my opinion. Sure Nehru , being Indian, did not know the etiquette of Jirga, but the hostility towards him was not warranted considering the fact that they agreed to be the hosts. From the available documents, it appears the men of jirga were already agitated and had been provoked by some body (Congress and KK blamed British authorities)........on the top of attempted assault on Nehru, the Mehsuds chased the cars of Nehru and Bacha Khan and pelted them with stones.....these are the same tribesmen who give asylum and protection to terrible criminals and murderers from other areas, who are completely safe under the rights of guest....... yet they maltreated a guest of Nehru stature.
