One of India’s most loved playback singers of Bollywood, Mohammed Rafi aka Mohd Rafi, died on July 31, 1980. The singer had a heart attack while on stage for a concert. 35 years after his death, Mohammad Rafi continues to be one of the most cherished Indian singers and one who is emulated by generation after generation (like sonu nigam in recent times). On his 35th death anniversary, we share a jukebox of some of his best songs from Bollywood.
Rafi sung for all Bollywood heroes of his time, including actor-singer Kishore Kumar when he didn’t do his own playback. Like singer Mukesh was synonymous with the name of actor Raj Kapoor, Mohd Rafi was to Dilip kumar , Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Bharat Bhushan, and many more.
The humble Rafi won six Filmfare Awards in his career and many more awards and recognitions, including the Padma Shri by the Government of India. Watch the best songs from the movies Rafi sang for – a collection of some of his most popular songs. Relive the Mohd Rafi magic!

Singer Mohammed Rafi aka Mohammad or Mohd Rafi was born on December 24, 1924, in Punjab, British India. In his early years, he began singing by imitating a fakir‘s singing in Lahore. Who knew that the fakir’s blessing would be with Rafi, for he went on to be one of the greatest playback singers of India.
Rafi created a niche in Hindi cinema with his melodious voice, singing romantic, tragic and patriotic songs as well as qawwalis and classical numbers for all the major stars of the black and white and early colour era of cinema. Rafi was honoured with six Filmfare Awards and a National Film Award. The Padma Shri award was also bestowed upon him by the Government of India.
He passed away on July 31, 1980.
Rafi also sang in regional languages of India and often collaborated with singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, among others. On his 90th birth anniversary today, we share a Top 10 songs jukebox of the singer. But to be frank, it is very difficult to choose only the top 10 songs of a singer who has hundreds of gems that have passed through his golden voice!

Pancham da created melodies way back in 70's which are still used by todays music directors as a benchmark to explore them with new set of innovations available through technology
