What is a Mortar Bomb?

The mortar bomb has a little brother whose range is less than 1km. Any guesses?

IMo, your hint towards this one or such kind mostly called "Commando Mortar".

60 MM COMMANDO MORTAR LM-60K

GALERIA:

DESCRIPTION
The Light mortar LM-60 K "Commando," is a development of mortar LM-60D construction. It was designed on demand of special reconnaissance troops. Due to high fire efficiency, great range and accuracy, small weight and high manoeuvrability the light mortar LM-60K provides effective support in all conditions, especially during the battle in urban area and uneven terrain. Steep round track and small size of the mortar in combat position allow to place it in deep cover which makes itdifficult for detection. In mortar gravitational sight and bolt are mounted. The sight allows flat track firingat the distance up to 1300m and the bolt allows firing at fixed or moving firing pin.

The Light Mortar LM-60K 60 mm “Commando” can be used against enemy manpower and enemy’s military devices located on counter slopes, ravines and behind terrain covers. It may be also used to destroy the observation and command posts as well as light fortifications during day and night, in all weather conditions.

Main characteristics:

  • very small dimensions,
  • high accuracy,
  • possibility of flat track shooting using firing mechanism,
  • great range,
  • low weight,
  • high manoeuvrability,
  • high efficiency of fire,
  • user-friendly weapon.

Breech loading USSR heavy mortar
280 mm mortar M1939
. This mortar was the Red Army´s heaviest field piece. Distinguished by the siege of Berlin, these weapons quickened up the Red Army´s assault on the German capital. Due to the heavy weight of shell (168 kg) the blast created a 10 metre wide crater that was 6 meters deep. The weapon had low rate of fire due to muzzle overheating

Its 20 meter barrel allowed it to fire 750 kg rounds up to 45 km. Due to its complexity of loading it had a relatively low rate of fire—one round every five minutes.

120 mm mortar has no alternative against terrorism due to low cost ammo , easy to use and great fire power.
Mortars are lighter then artillery. Mortars also have less recoil and velocity then artillery.

When I read news reports it says someone was hit by mortar. It never says someone was hit by mortar bomb

A mortar is a device that fires projectiles indirectly at targets at low velocities and short ranges. Mortar bombs are often referred to, incorrectly, as "mortars"

Is there a name for the projectiles ?

Most common would be mortar bomb. Otherwise, use mortar round or mortar projectile, if you want to include a wider range of ammunition e.g. guided rounds like Stryx. Another one would be mortar munition, as in XM-395 precision guided mortar munition.

Some interesting developments during the SL civil war by both LTTE and Government

This is a Pasilan mortar built and used by the LTTE

To counter this Sri Lankan forces created the "Kempiya". Not sure how much of a history it had or how effective it was.

To counter the LTTE "PASILAN 2000" Mortar, Brig (Late) BSG Kempitiya & Brig K Piyasoma SLEME introduced the "KEMPIYA" mortar gun. The idea had been initiated by (Late) Lieutenant General Densil Kobbakaduwa In the year 1992 the Ordnance Factory was established to manufacture the Kempiya gun & its ammunition. It was the 1st Factory to produce weapon & ammunition in the Sri Lankan Army history. TRIP FLAIRS were also manufactured at the Ordnance Factory and provided to the operational troops. Presently these pride Armaments are laid down in RHQ SLAOC premises as Exhibit Guns.

Bellow photographs show the manufacturing and history of the "KEMPIYA" mortar gun in Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps.

At the end of 1990, LTTE terrorists produced a mortar launcher called "Pasilan 2000" and used it against the Sri Lanka Army. This weapon was able to deliver a 50 kg explosive to a distance of 500m. Terrorists attacked Mullaitivu, Silawathura and Karainagar Naval Camps using this weapon.

In order to repulse these attacks, then commander of the 2 Div Major General DL Kobbekaduwa RWP RSP VSV USP rcds psc entrusted his officers with the task of finding the possibility of producing a new weapon that could curtail and bring damage to the enemy. Consequently, a mortar launcher of 8 inches diameter fixed to a 8 meter long tractor trailer and a bomb of 15 kg in weight that could be delivered to a range of 800m was produced by Lt Col DSG Kempitiya ato (Deceased Brigadier DSG Kempitiya USP ato) and Commanding Officer of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Lt Col Piyasoma (Retired). In order to honour the officers who produced the mortar launcher and the bomb, the mortar bomb was named as "KEMPIYA" by joining the first letters of the surnames of those two officers.

As a result of these researches, the first Ordnance Factory was established by then Lt Col DSG Kempitiya USP ato on 12th June 1992 with staff headed by Capt HL Guruge, 1 Warrant Officer, 5 NCOs and 9 soldiers. At final stage the following weapons and bombs were produced in the Ordnance Factory.

a. 198 mm K8 Mortar launcher - 4 Nos
b. 99 mm K4 Mortar (5 barrels) - 1 No
