What happens when China’s Monkey King gets behind the wheel?
Traffic cops pulling over a bus in Jiyuan city, central China’s Henan Province, on Tuesday were surprised to find mythological Chinese figure the Monkey King in the driving seat.
Once onboard the bus, police came across the full cast of characters from classical novel “Journey to the West,” which is set in a world of shapeshifting demons and heroic monks.
They were in fact actors hurrying (a little too fast) on their way to a performance, as the driver proved when he pulled off his mask and produced his driver’s license.
“Journey to the West” is immensely popular in China, where crowds rush to see stage and film adaptations. “Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back” broke the record for the largest single day in Chinese box office history during the recent Spring Festival holiday.
