PUNJAB Government’s decision to dole out a lucrative package to top officials of the province is hotly being debated these days. Under the package, Chief Secretary and IG Police have not only been granted hefty allowance but they would also receive attractive perks after their retirement including allowance for driver and batman as well as charges for phone calls, electricity units and petrol on monthly basis. Similarly, employees working in the civil secretariat would get 50% special allowance besides utility allowance ranging from 3000 to 7000 rupee per month.
Government servants have all along been complaining that incumbent government was miser as compared to previous PPP Government as far as increase in their salaries and allowance is concerned. They have been resenting negligible increase in their salaries announced on the occasion of budgets, as this was not sufficient to compensate for the inflation or rising cost of living. In this backdrop, the Punjab Government deserves appreciation for taking cognisance of the difficulties and sufferings of its employees and issuing orders to make their lives easier. However, it is quite relevant to point out that the increase would be applicable to only those working in the civil secretariat in Lahore and not to hundreds of thousands of employees in different parts of the province. Every citizen is affected by the rising inflation and all employees need equal treatment when it comes to provision of relief for them. The policy of pick and choose is going to create resentment and widen the sense of deprivation especially those working in other major cities and far-flung and disadvantaged areas. While appreciating the decision of Punjab Government, we would urge it to announce similar increases for other employees of the province. In fact it should keep in mind needs and difficulties of all employees as its developmental agenda can only be implemented smoothly by a satisfied governmental machinery.
