Western Firm Cambridge Analytica is Meddling in Pakistan’s Democracy – Not Russia

The controversial big data mining firm Cambridge Analytica (CA) is working on Pakistan from a Dubai based office. This foreign firm was hired by ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to rescue his political career and to make sure his political party PML-N win in the upcoming general election. CA was initially hired during the Panama scandal case, as part of the campaign to smear the judiciary of Pakistan. Recently, it was announced that this firm would give the Reed Award to its campaigners, who acted behind the scenes in the online targeting of Pakistan’s judiciary. Many scandalous stories about the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan which were published by international media outlets and Pakistani media, especially the Jang/Geo group, were crafted by CA experts. A credible internal source in this firm revealed that CA input was included in some news stories to malign Pakistan’s top intelligence agency and judiciary to give the impression that Pakistan’s judiciary is not independent and it is working against Nawaz at the behest of Pakistan’s deep state. It was also revealed that the campaign organizers and media manager experts of CA accelerated fake news with the assistance of Pakistani media godfather Mir Shakeel Ur Rahman (MSR) with the aim to manipulate Pakistan’s in-house affairs in the favour of former Prime Minister Nawaz.
This manipulation is still ongoing. If we look deep into Pakistan’s mainstream media and social media, we can easily unearth a series of fake news against Pakistan and its state intuition. After his disqualification from public office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif also instructed CA to promote his PML-N party throughout the current election cycle. As a Pakistani citizen, I am closely monitoring the ongoing well-organized campaign against Pakistan’s judiciary and state institutions. CA firm is working closely with Pakistan’s media godfather Mir Shakeel Ur Rahman who is using his experience to manipulate Pakistan’s in-house affairs from his Dubai based office.
The well organized anti-State narrative that propagated through this firm in Pakistan known as the ‘Greater Punjab Plot’, was uncovered by Pakistan’s former president Asif Ali Zardari. Therefore, for the first time in the country’s history, the deep state came forward to counter this game plan of breaking Pakistan by gathering all ethnic groups under the flag of united Pakistan. The recent election results for the Senate are the result of this united effort.
These results brought a pro-Pakistan Baloch to the front line of politics by electing a Baloch as the chairman of Pakistan’s Upper House, with the support of Sindhi, Saraiki, and Pashtun. In other words, the Pakistani establishment and all opposition parties countered the ‘Greater Punjab’ rhetoric with patriotic Balochistan. It was a big defeat for the proprietors of that dirty plot against the sovereignty of Pakistan.
But the game is not over yet; it is the still beginning of the general election season. The forthcoming general election will be the test for Pakistan and its state institutions, in respect of how they prevent the hybrid threat of hacking democracy. In the 21st century, hacking democracy has become a common phenomenon by using modern technologies and big data firms. Military organizations, political parties, and marketing companies are using data science to change the behaviour of the masses through manipulation. This applied science is used to control the mindset of a target group after analyzing sets of data (both biased and unbiased) which was collected from the population by applying scientific methods. This is not only about the practical or empirical methods, there needs to be scientific foundations to draw the information after a detailed study of data. But now, big data-mining firms have modified this data science by using the advantages of the social media, behavioural communication, and information science.
The hiring of big data firms for military purposes, political and commercial business campaigns has become a new trend to achieve a target-oriented goal. Former president of America Barack Obama used this data science for his political campaign. Emerging social media at that time played a vital role in the entry of Obama in Oval Office. More recently, Donald Trump hired one of world big data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica (CA) for his presidential campaign. Trump’s political slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ was also invented by this firm.
Chief Executive of the CA, Alexander Nix described the role of his firm in meddling American election as such, “CA was able to provide the campaign with predictive analytics based on more than 5,000 data points on every voter in the United States. From there, CA’s team of political consultants and psychologists guided the campaign on what to say and how to say it to specific groups of voters.”
This is a vocal acknowledgement from Trump’s data guru that he was able to change the behaviour of American voters in favour of a Trump victory in the presidential election, but unfortunately, the American deep state blamed Russia for hacking American democracy – a claim which is totally baseless and untrue. In a total disingenuous move, American mainstream media tried to link-up CA with WikiLeaks. While CA did contact Wikileaks, Julian Assange is on the record as rebuffing CA’s advances.
American warmongers within the deep state worked for a Hillary Clinton victory through their control of American mainstream media, but they nevertheless failed to elect her. As a result, Clinton’s team blamed her loss on Russia, in order to accelerate hostility towards Moscow and to apply pressure on President Trump so that he could not establish friendly relations with Russia. They have succeeded in this regard as Trump surrendered to the war hungry deep state. That being said, the fight within the deep state between FBI and CIA also helped Trump to use the situation in his favour, as the FBI investigated Clinton after emails leaks scandal.
The CIA blamed Russia for hacking Hillary Clinton’s DNC emails and allegedly passing them to Wikileaks. The purpose of this blame was to influence the FBI investigation against her. To a degree they succeeded. While she did not go to jail, she ended up losing the election. US intelligence agencies propagated a myth that Wikileaks worked for Russia, but it is a fact that Russia has no links with Wikileaks.
An independent journalist Suzie Dawson did a great deal of research on Wikileaks and its founder Julian Assange. During an interview Dawson said of Assange, “He has been called so many conflicting things. He was called neo-Nazi, and then he was called an agent of Israel or an agent of Russia. Some people also called him an agent of America and a CIA agent, but Julian is none of those things. Julian is the agent of change and truth is his only weapon. He used truth to bring us change and it is not his fault that this changed happened to be Trump.”

This is because Russia and Pakistan, after a long time are coming close to each other and Russia has no direct interest in rescuing the corrupt Nawaz Sharif, not least because Nawaz is very close to globalist neo-liberal manipulators as he was working in Pakistan to accomplish the neo-liberal agenda by changing the constitution of Pakistan, which is anti-liberal in nature. Besides this, Russia has historically good relations with Pakistan’s left-wing political parties, especially the Pakistan People Party.
The above described scenario points to the fact that it was CA who interfered at the behest of Trump in the US election as a means of countering the wishes of the wider US deep state which along with the mainstream media engaged in a conspiracy of its own to promote Hillary Clinton. Thus, while Hillary Clinton and the Democrats openly conspired with the mainstream media, Trump hired CA to use the forces of social media to collectively conspire to promote him.
Here it is necessary to mention that CA was created by the SCL (Strategic Communication Laboratories) Group for political campaigns. It is a private British behavioral research and strategic communication company working closely with NATO and the US State Department. In many countries, the SCL group was also used for regime changes and to bring about colour revolutions in targeted states. Even NBC news reported that the Company was awarded State Department contracts last year (2017) to help fight ISIS recruitment and has taught behavioural change science at a NATO-affiliated training program. In this regard, it is really alarming for Pakistan, as America has already teamed up with India to threaten the sovereignty of Pakistan. This SCL group and its political data-driven firm can become a tool of hybrid war against Pakistan as I already mentioned in one of the previous article titled, “Exclusive: Hacking Democracy – Cambridge Analytica Turns to Pakistan”. Here I discussed how the data of all Pakistani students which was collected by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan was given to CA, while data collected from National Database Registration Authority and Election Commission of Pakistan regarding voters and constituencies are also given to this firm.
American investigators of Russiagate failed to retrieve a single piece of evidence about Russian involvement in hacking American democracy. It is very convenient to pin the blame on Russia for international and domestic failures, in order to hide the truth from a public hypnotised by Russophobia. In fact, the ruling regimes of the US-led Western countries weaponized this Russophobia to spread hate against Russia among their masses. For this purpose, they even staged false flag events intended to pin the blame on Russia. They openly used huge amounts of money along with the manipulation techniques of big data firms to topple the elected government in Ukraine. They initiated a military coup in Kiev designed to encircle Russia with an eastward expanding NATO. To deflect attention from their coup in Kiev, they pinned the blame for instability on Russia as part of a calculated propaganda campaign. Now, the west is looking to boycott the Russian hosted football world cup on the request of Ukraine even though they have no solid reason to do so. Therefore, they falsely staged the Skripal nerve toxin attack to blame Russia and now as a result, relations between Russia and the West have plunged into an ever deepening crisis.
Recently Russian President Vladimir Putin held up a mirror to western global manipulator elite and addressed their baseless ‘blame campaign’ against Russia. Speaking with NBC news anchor Megyn Kelly, Putin said, “We’re holding discussions with our American friends and partners, people who represent the government, by the way, and when they claim that some Russians interfered in the US elections, we tell them and we did so fairly recently at a very level, ‘But you are constantly interfering in our political life’. Can you imagine, they don’t even deny it, you know what they told us last time? They said, ‘Yes, we do interfere but we are entitled to do it because we are spreading democracy and you’re not, and you can’t do it’. Does this seem like a civilized and modern approach to international affairs? At the level of the Russian government and the level of Russian President, there has never been any interference in the internal political process of the United States.”

Hence, this is the reason that Facebook after the publication of my previous article, suspended the CA/SCL group from its social media netowrk by saying, “Protecting people’s information is at the heart of everything we do, and we require the same from people who operate apps on Facebook. In 2015, we learned that a psychology professor at the University of Cambridge named Dr. Aleksandr Kogan lied to us and violated our Platform Policies by passing data from an app that was using Facebook Login to SCL/Cambridge Analytica, a firm that does political, government and military work around the globe. He also passed that data to Christopher Wylie of Eunoia Technologies, Inc.”
If Facebook can ban this company in order to protect its users’ data, then why can’t Pakistani authorities also take action and ban SCL/Cambridge Analytica from operating in Pakistan? To protect people and the data of citizens is the basic duty of the state and its intuitions. Being a patriotic Pakistani journalist, it was my obligation to bring these facts forward and to expose a dirty game against Pakistan. I did my duty and now it is the duty of the state and its institutions to act properly so that the sovereignty of Pakistan can be protected from such hybrid threats.
