WBA president calls for Khan-Peterson rematch: Report
Published: January 7, 2012
World Boxing Association (WBA) President Gilberto Mendoza has called for a rematch between British boxer Amir Khan and American Lamont Peterson after the emergence of a controversy in their previous match, BBC Sport reported.
Khan, who lost his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles to Peterson, had accused an unidentified man earlier this week of ‘interfering’ with officials and the judges’ scorecards during his defeat.
Mendoza told BBC Sport that the issue generated a lot of controversy and there should be a rematch as the Washington DC Commission “did not behave properly” during the fight.
Khan had claimed that the intruder talked to WBA Supervisor Michael Welsh and even celebrated with Peterson after the match; however, Welsh has refused to comment on the issue.
The report also said that Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer has demanded that the result of the match be changed to a “no-contest”.
“At the very least I think both sanctioning organisations [the World Boxing Association and the International Boxing Federation] should order an immediate rematch and the two fighters can settle the score in the ring.”
