According to the Indus Water Treaty the waters of the Western rivers belong to Pakistan and the waters of the Eastern Rivers belong to India–at least in theory. By illegally occupying Kashmir with a forged article of accession (which is ostensibly lost now–and was never shown to either Pakistan or the UN), India now controls all the rivers. Water wars are not part of some sci-fi movie–they are happening now.

By using Bait Mehsud and Karzai to distract Pakistani, India is now unleashing water damage, first by inundating Pakistan with too much water, and then by starving the farmer by witholding the water at a critical time.

Wednesday, September 17, 2008 By Khalid Mustafa ISLAMABAD: Punjab, the food basket of entire Pakistan, has sustained a huge monetary loss amounting to almost Rs37 billion in the wake of a blockade of Chenab River by India.

According to a senior official in the Punjab irrigation department, over 10 million acres of land in the province has been affected and the standing paddy crop in the area has suffered a lot, as it was the time of maturity and the province badly needed the last watering, which could not be completed just because of the blatant violations of Indus Waters Treaty 1960 by India and continuing to fill up the dead shortage of Baglihar HPP beyond August 31, 2008.

Under the treaty, India cannot reduce the flow in Chenab River below 55,000 cusecs between 21st June and August 31, 2008, whereas Pakistan had been receiving a discharge of as low as 20,000 cusecs during August-September 2008.

The official further said that the government had projected the rice production at 5.7 million tonnes, but the reduction in flows in Chenab River at this point of time will reduce the production by 15 to 20 per cent. This means that rice production will come down from the expected target of 5.7 million tonnes to 4.7 million tonnes. The News

India was currently spending around $200 billion on the construction of water tunnels to the Indus River, which could turn parts of Pakistan into a barren land

India is going ahead with the controversial Baghliar Dam on River Chenab, while Pakistan government, after raising belated objections, has still not taken the decisive steps that are necessary to have this project stopped. Its pathetic proof was seen at the fourth round of the so-called Composite Dialogue between the two countries held in Islamabad from 19-21 May 2008. According to the officials, “The contentious issue of the Baghliar Dam could not find place in the agenda of the foreign ministers’ talks despite Pakistan’s insistence.” The Water Bomb by Majid Nizami

Lt Gen (r) Hameed Gul has said that India has so far built 62 dams and hydro-electric units on Pakistani rivers to deprive Pakistan of water and render into a desert. He said Pakistan was being deprived of water under an international conspiracy to conquer it. At this stage, some insane people were opposing construction of Kalabagh Dam in Pakistan, he added. He said that Shaukat Aziz’s influx in Pakistan was also part of the conspiracy as he formulated such policies, which put the country into crisis. He said that Shaukat Aziz created food shortage. He said the mujahideeen damaged Baglihar Dam and it could not be reconstructed.

Hameed Gul, however, warned that the mujahideen would damage all dams. Sindh Water Council Chairman Hafiz Zahoor-ul-Hassan Dahr said that when the dispute on water would not be resolved, there would be conflict between the two countries. He said, “India is not building dams under the Indus Water Treaty but on the Pakistani rivers.” He said that the food shortage would be forty per cent next year that would increase starvation in the country. He warned, “Pakistan can become Somalia and Ethopia,” he added.

What can be the permanent solution to this? On one side, India wants friendship while constantly back-stabbing - Fascist hindu mentality. Is Pakistan provoking a next war or India?

Why are u quoting yahoos like Hamid Gul etc, are they the authority on such issues? Haven't they bought enough grief to Pak .?

The Baghliar was inspected & found OK by international arbitrators whom Pak approached. The only wanted to lower the height of the dam by 5 ft. Now what r we cribbing about ?

India like anyone else has a right to protect its interest 1st always & every time. Its for Pak to manage its water. Why is so much water allowed to flow into the sea in Sindh ? Instead of cribbing abt what someone else is doing, if the situations is s " life threatening" not a drop must be allowed to flow into the sea.

For this u need a Govt that is keen to spend on such issues & not only on the Fauji Foundation & account for the money spent which even the 'all weather friend " & IMF now seeks.

Watch your language dude, fascist Hindu mentality?

are you retarded or were you just dropped on your head as a child?

let me just add this..............

In Islamic philosophy, the Propthet (PBUH) has been heard mentioning the water near doomsday or the end of the world as being the most sought after commodity adn a precursor for many wars that ultimately will lead to this world's demise.

So...all this in my humble opinon is bound to happen and as i believe, it is all according to Allah's will. May he have mercy on mankind and allow us to co-exist and not to fight over water, a must have product in order to sustain life.

Amen.

Well, if India has her right to protect her interests than so did Pakistan. It is the time for Pakistan to use now some other ways to force the implementation of the Indus water treaty and India to decide in the favour of both countries. Sometimes small conflicts cause gigantic disasters. Pakistan and India should resolve this mater peacefully or else both the countries will face the consequences and not only Pakistan.

India furnishes data on Chenab water level to Pak officials

23 Oct 2008, 2205 hrs IST, PTI

NEW DELHI: Seeking to counter Pakistan's charge that it had blocked the flow of water of Chenab river, India on Thursday furnished data related to water level of the river as senior officials of the two sides met to discuss the issue.

The Indus Water Commissioners of the two countries met here in the backdrop of Islamabad's allegations that New Delhi had blocked Chenab river water flow to fill the dam for the recently commissioned Baglihar power project in Jammu and Kashmir and claimed that it had affected cultivation in that country.

Sources said the Indian side furnished "facts and figures" to counter Islamabad's charge.

India has maintained that water flow was not blocked by it but the level was less because of low availability of water in the river.

At the two-day talks, the Indian side is led by G Ranganathan and the Pakistan side is headed by its Indus Commissioner Syed Jamaat Ali Shah.

Ahead of the meeting, sources said Pakistan is expected to seek compensation for the alleged blockade.

Shah and his delegation visited Baglihar project on Monday for an on-the-spot assessment of the water situation.

The Pakistani side says there was an understanding between the two countries that the dam would be filled between June 21 and August 21, when monsoon would have been at its peak.

Dear Cgd,

Would be curious to know what CONCRETE measures would you recommend if
you were the President of Pakistan ? Lets face it the Indians will use the water knowingly and unknowingly to covertly blackmail Pakistan. This time the reasons of diverting the water maybe genuine as the reservoir has to be filled for generating electricity but I agree the consequences must have been disastrous for the poor Farmers of Pakistan. GOP is also to blame as their own water management policy is pathetic.

Regards

Its a matter of Fact that future wars will be fought on WATER resources. It was predicted long time ago.

I agree 100 percent with that, metal falcon. it will happen.

Pakistan should send some PAF to bomb these dams into oblivion. They've got our jugular, so to speak. lets do something before they squeeze it.

Of course dear India is Giving us a Very good Reason to Fight, Kill and Die for. After Oxygen whats more Important to human life ? Its water dear.

India Must fully compile by Indus water Treaty or it will be very Bad for International Peace.

Other wise What Options India is Giving to Pakistan,

1.Die Thirsty or
2.TRY, Fight and Die (And If ALLAH helps us we may win)
3. Raise the Issue in front of Deaf and Blind International agency like UN

If by doing something you mean bomb the dams, it'll only hasten the demise of your country.
